Writing Snippet:
The following week had been, a little touch and go. While Whitty had been reassured that Carol and Hex knowing about his situation didn't change their friendship, or the fact that they were still friends, he was noticing some…differences, in how they treated him now.
Not, big differences, or really bad differences, but the mood had changed somewhat. Whitty noticed it especially when he left Carol's house after a few days of more or less camping out in her back bedroom. And, he knew he'd have had to go eventually, he'd been getting that familiar twitchiness show up, making it difficult to sleep or even relax. The cure was to move, and keep moving. Make sure his chances of being tracked down were as low as he could get them.
It was a fact of his life, and he'd gotten used to it, but…
…Well, Carol and Hex hadn't been totally on board with it before. Now, they seemed even more worried about Whitty leaving. Hex had to head back to his house, but he made Whitty promise to come and stay after three days, or at least check in. Carol outright shoved an entire roll of twenties into Whitty's hands, and a plastic shopping bag with ready-to-eat snacks.
"It's Hex's money, and he's not taking it back. In case of an emergency, you hold onto it, alright?" She was saying, Whitty faintly overwhelmed and irritated at the attention but he tried to keep the latter emotion in check. They were trying to make sure he'd be alright.
Even if the somewhat frenetic preparation felt a little excessive, he'd certainly made do with less…
"…Yeah, alright," he mumbled. "Dunno if I need this, though."
This being the aforementioned plastic bag. With a good amount of food. Even if there was a part of Whitty that cringed heavily at the notion of wasting it, he couldn't help the thought that the bag would get in his way. It was far better, and easier, to travel light.
But seeing how she'd packed it, with a mix of his favorites and other things that were clearly meant to be a replacement for meals, Whitty couldn't help swallowing down his thoughts about it. Besides, he could just chuck the bag when he was done with it, it wasn't like he was obligated to give it back…
And, even though he had a feeling she'd watched him leave, Carol did let him go. Albeit there was a part of Whitty that couldn't help wondering if Carol would've wanted him to stay longer.
Not that he really felt safe doing that. He'd been there for about three days, and while he hadn't exactly made a habit of wandering around outside, someone with enough persistence could've figured out where he was. It was safer for Carol and Sunday if he wasn't there, that was the long and short of it.
Though for everyone's worry, the next few days were quiet, apart from the fact that he basically was hiding out in alleyways. He didn't really sleep, maybe caught a few minutes here and there; the mostly on his feet, nearly passing out kind. Probably not the more restful type that would've made Hex and Carol happy, but it was the best he could do.
In a way it was almost a relief to realize that it was Friday, and Hex would be expecting him down at the park near the basketball courts.
