By this point, Shadow had gotten pretty good at scaling down the fire escape. The last hop was a little scary, of course, but she’d jumped from that height flinging herself from the swings on the playground at school. Again she was following Casey, or trying to. She knew what the big secret was now, but having to stay home while he was out was so lame.

Tonight, she didn’t bother to check for anyone else in the alley. She dropped down from her little perch, yelping when she slipped, landing flat on her rear with a startled little cry. “Owww...! Stupid rain...”

His voice was failing him now and breathing was getting more difficult. In desperation he asked one question plainly.
