The easiest way in popular media to sabotage something before it’s even gotten off the ground is to compare it to an existing property.

You instantly stop judging the new thing on its own merits, with a broad scale of criteria, and it becomes all about finding direct comparisons for select categories determined by the example instead of what’s being reviewed

For sure, Kabaneri’s a bad replacement for SNK, but it’s also an entirely different beast, with only the most superficial relation to attack on titan, because it shared the production staff and was produced in the lull between SNK seasons.

But tonally, narratively, and structurally it’s an entirely different story, with a vastly different focus on it’s themes and delivery of character and worldbuilding.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuttt no one cared about that because “LOL AOT RIPOFF” when it was at the height of it’s popularity. And now that SNK has been written off by the vast majority of the community for a vast array of criticisms and concerns with it’s direction, no one remembers either of them.But if Kabaneri had had a chance to stand on its own, perhaps it might have been.
