単純にPCI Expressを延長できるインターフェイスとしては、Thunderbolt以上に期待が持てる印象だ。実装部品の少なさからくる低コストもさることながら(実際の製品が出てくるまで分からないが、今のところ間違いなくThunderboltより安いだろう)、ケース内蔵を前提としながらもPCI Express配線の自由度を高めるインターフェイスとしてはかなり有望である。

初めてSATA Expressに触れてみたが、正直なところ「SATA 6Gbpsを超えるストレージ性能を実現できるインターフェイス」というより、「PCI Expressを(公式規格によって)ケーブルで延長できるインターフェイス」としてのインパクトが大きかった。

ASM106SEは「PCI Express 2.0 x2接続のSATA 6Gbps対応コントローラだが、PCI Expressデバイス接続時はPCI Expressのプロトコルをそのままパススルーするコントローラ」だと捉えて良さそうだ。
ASUSのプロトタイプで次世代I/F「SATA Express」を検証
コネクタ付近にはASMediaの「ASM1467」と呼ばれるチップが、1コネクタあたり2個付いている。ASMediaで公開されているASM1467の製品情報を見ると、NGFF(M.2)リドライバのようだ。M.2では1つのコネクタでPCI ExpressとSATAのいずれかが利用できるわけだが、SATA Expressも同じということだ。M.2はSATA Expressと同時にSATA Revision 3.2で策定された規格なわけだが、これで両技術が兄弟関係であることがよく分かる。

Z87-DELUXE/SATAEXPRESSはSATA Express検証用に作られたプロトタイプである。ASUS広報によると、日本にたった1枚しか入っていない特別な製品だ。実際にSATA Expressコネクタを搭載するのは、次世代のIntelチップセット搭載製品になると見込まれる。
