From the outside, Jade Citadel is a palace carved in white jade, a tower fit for royalty. But on the inside, layers of levels are carved within the stone, an indestructible fortress of fossil stones. Aurelia has never dared to venture below water level, the dark tunnels below ground claustrophobic and far more ancient than the empire itself.
Death leads her down the stairs like they have done this a thousand times. And they let out a chuckle when they emerge into a cryptesque chamber, saying, “I assume you have never been here before, Gongzhu.” When she doesn’t reply, they beckon her forward, arms stretching out as if they are a presenter. “Welcome to Porcelain Hall, where ancient fallen warriors lay and are remembered for their sacrifice. But I suppose the remembrance part of it is forgotten.”
“This is Porcelain Hall?”
She doesn’t mean for her words to sound mocking, but the look Death gives her sends chills down her spine. Pressing her lips together, she opts to look around the chamber.
Intricate interweaving columns arch up to the ceiling, perfectly polished and stone white. A circular set of stairs sits in the middle, a delicately carved sculpture of a warrior with a fox curled around their ankles sitting on each side to face the middle. Stepping up carefully, Aurelia approaches the tall imposing statue that stands in the landing of the steps, the carving stretches towards the ceiling and depicts a pair of warriors back to back with fossilised briars winding up to bind them together. There is an opening between the two warrior sculptures.
With bated breath, Aurelia takes a few steps forward, and finds herself staring straight into a pond of rainbow water.
“That’s it?”
Death laughs, a nightmarish black mist bursting from within their gown and leaking around to surround the pond in a boiling black liquid. “You seem to have high expectations.”
Aurelia scoffs, crossing her arms to peer into the pond. It shimmers under the glow of the white jade, reflecting a light against the walls. She sees herself in the crystal clear water, a still prism mirror of liquid that ripples at her feather-like touch when she hesitantly skims a finger over the water. It is a warmth that pricks her fingertip, a tingling sensation.
“Tick tock, little princess, you don’t want to be late, do you?” Aurelia catches the faintest trace of a sly smile on Death’s skull, their jaw lifting ever so slightly, just as she feels the sudden push on her back. And she is falling headfirst into the colourful darkness of the pool.
➟ SCIENCE FICTION, ROMANCE
➟ POV — THIRD PERSON
➟ MAJOR THEMES — power, religion, and politics / inheritance and nepotism / familial competition for the throne / mind control / master and captive dynamic (except the master is an heiress and the captive is deadly) / power play
➟ SYNOPSIS —
In a society where the filthy rich live in the skies and everyone else below, an heiress to one of five noble families is offered a captive as a gift - one with a deadly and, fortunately rare, affinity for mind control. He is one of last and his genetic skill must be kept a secret while the heiress seeks to rob her brothers of their father's throne, all for the hungry desire to rule an inhospitable, divided world.
➟ EXCERPT —
His blade rattled with vibration whenever its tip came too close to her neck. Once, twice, thrice, he swung it at her porcelain skin and yet it did not touch her. Defying death, she stood as still as an AI, head craned and face unchanged. Her stare, restrained, treaded the line between amusement and coldness like a panther on a hunt. He repeated the act until his blood-thirst wilted and the fruitlessness of his anger dawned on him. And when he looked at her, he heard her mind loud and clear: Done yet?
He lost his momentum.
For a mere fraction of a second, a mere breath, he wavered. Her arm moved without her body, the white sleeve of her dress dancing as her dagger sliced the air and found refuge in his abdomen. Instead of listening to her conscience, he listened to his own heartbeat roar and succumbed to the agony that followed. Wordlessly, she stabbed him as if he hadn't tried to do the same to her for the last minute, and her blade sunk into his flesh like into a new home. Searching. Punishing. Deeper. Further. Until he could smell his own blood and she finally spoke with a voice of a stone-cold ruler, “Don't be a fool and think you can rob me of my life. Death does not touch us.”

To avoid trouble, Adelina hides behind her father’s surname and hides her affliction in layers of clothes.
But then her uncle goes missing the same night the Rot –– a mysterious entity that’s been slowly consuming other sky-cities –– first makes its presence known in Ascension. With her city and family in a panic, Adelina goes on a quest to discover the reason behind his disappearance and how it relates to the Rot. a little something i wrote as a way to get inside gabriel’s mind and understand his perspective on his childhood/life a bit more!! this isn’t something that will be in the actual story, it’s just to help me with the character, but i really liked it so i wanted to share it here <3
transcription and tags under the cut!! (dm/send an ask to be added/removed!)
My parents never expected me. They were too busy to have a family, too preoccupied with fame and fortune and all that was encompassed in what they called “a pirate’s life.” A child just didn’t fit their plans.
But my parents weren’t careful. They never were. So along came me, a blessing and a curse.
Don’t get me wrong, my parents loved me immensely and never let me think otherwise. But I knew it wasn’t the life they wanted. They were no longer just pirates, but parents as well.
However, they never let raising me get in the way of their adventures. They simply brought me along. They wouldn’t give up the life they built just to give their kid a “normal” childhood. (What was normal anyways?)
Where most children grew up playing with neighbors, going to school and kicking balls in the streets, I grew up on the sea. My friends were the dolphins that skimmed the surface and lept through the wake of our ship. They were the men with weathered, sunburnt faces and scars littering their skin, who looked out for me as if I were their own, protecting me when our ship came under attack. They were the women who helped me with my reading and writing when my parents were inevitably preoccupied at the moment I needed them most. They were the few other children aboard, most of them freed slaves or orphans that my parents’ crew took in so they would at least have a place to sleep and food in their stomachs, with whom I practiced my hand-to-hand combat and sword-fighting.
My childhood was far from normal, but I liked it that way.
