Savage - Book One
Writer: B. Clay Moore Artists: Lewis Larosa & Clayton Henry Colourist: Brian Reber | November 2016 | Published by Valiant Entertainment
After Harbinger Renegade #1 earlier this month, Savage is the latest in Valiant’s “The Future of Valiant” push, introducing a new dinosaur hunter to the universe in the vein of Turok, Ka-Zar, or some incarnations of Tarzan.
That this series doesn’t have Marguerite Sauvage variant covers seems like a criminal missed opportunity.
B. Clay Moore breaks the story of the first issue into two halves and two time periods. The first focuses on “Savage” in the present, fighting off a dinosaur for food in a largely silent sequence. As he returns home to his makeshift shack, we’re presented with a bunch of items that lead us to believe that he’s the child in the second section.
That second section, set sometime in the past, sets up how “Savage” possibly got to the island filled with dinosaurs as we’re left assuming that he’s KJ, the infant son of Kevin and Veronica Sauvage, a footballer and his publicist wife, who crashed on the island years earlier. I leave that as an assumption, but it’s probably a safe assumption. Moore might be setting us up for a shock reveal, but at this point there’s no reason to really think that.
Moore does a good job giving a voice to Kevin and Veronica, likely modelling Kevin at least partially after David Beckham. He sets up a conflict between Kevin and Veronica, over Kevin’s dwindling prospects in football and moving to the US before those prospect dry up, but it feels natural and conflict born out of caring rather than strife.
Something horrible down the road is also foreshadowed for Veronica. She took a nasty bump to the head in the plane crash, which may be a contributing factor to her sleeping a lot and fever. It feels like Moore is setting the family up for tragedy sometime soon.
The heavy lifting on the first silent section is left to the artwork, with Lewis Larosa and colourist Brian Reber delivering an almost painted approach. They do a very good job conveying the ferocity of the battle between Savage and the dinosaur.
In the second section, Clayton Henry presents a much more “normal” comic book style that both helps keep the section distinct from the present and also give it a better grounding in the real world.
Ultimately, this is a good first issue and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. Larosa and Henry’s artwork for the respective time periods are a nice touch to differentiate the structure and feel of each and the story that Moore is telling is an interesting one even if done before.
I do find it kind of funny that Valiant is incorporating a new kind of Turok into their stable since this incarnation can no longer use the Gold Key properties. I just wonder if a Robot Hunter and a Man of the Atom are also somewhere on the horizon. Although I suppose there could be an argument made for Rai and Divinity filling those roles respectively.
I recommend this one for people looking for another take on the land out of time, feral child story as well as those following on for the next phase that Valiant is taking with their universe.
Week Eight
And so it ends.
Or at least the main mini-series portion of the crossover ends. There’s still a tie-in issue in the form of Transformers: More than Meets the Eye: Revolution to be released next week.
Revolution #5
Writers: John Barber & Cullen Bunn Artist: Fico Ossio Colourist: Sebastian Cheng | November 2016 | Published by IDW
And it ends in disappointment.
After fighting among themselves for the first portion of the issue, the combined forces of the Transformers, Micronauts, ROM, MASK, and a squad from GI Joe riding in as cavalry take on Baron Karza enerchanged with a giant Dire Wraith as the story abandons all sense of plot or direction in favour of a mindless battle.
I suppose that’s kind of to be expected after the last issue seemingly dropped any sort of following the plot which was finally being delved into in issue three, and this kind of substitution of a big bad for a finale often happens in major linewide crossovers. Even from that side it’s kind of a narrative mess that doesn’t line up with what happened in GI Joe: Revolution or what exactly is going on with Metrotitan needing to levitate Autobot City above the pit of Ore 13 that’s caught fire and looks like it’s about to explode. The ultimate solution for Karza and the Space Bridge also feels somewhat muddled.
That said, there are some nice character moments. Optimus Prime gets a decent hero push a couple of times during the issue, first leading the attack against Karza and then the final push.
And as always, Fico Ossio’s artwork is great. Although the story leaves much to be desired, the action and battle is rendered impeccably by him. Optimus’ shell ripped open to reveal the Matrix is particularly harrowing and well-rendered.
I’ll still do a post mortem of the entire crossover in a couple weeks or so after the final book comes out, but week by week the main series was disappointing. Barber and Bunn separately are capable of so much better than this, it feels like either they were caught up in following the different spinning plates that they forgot to give an overall satisfying meal of a plot, or from the onset this was just supposed to be a dumb tosspot of the properties and nothing more, any semblance of a plot beyond “Transformers fight GI Joe” or “Micronauts fight MASK” was just dumb luck.
There’s a lot still left unanswered in regards to Mayhem and Karza’s machinations, what exactly was going on with Ore 13, and a whole lot of lack of connective tissue and missing narrative beats between the main series and the rest of the Hasbro universe.
