Can we understand and treat ageing?
What if ageing is a disease? What if we could treat it? Could we gain prolonged youth?
Modern biogerontology proposes that age-related diseases are in fact symptoms of one common underlying disease: ageing itself. Thus by understanding and treating ageing, we may simultaneously offset all of the diseases of ageing.
Remarkably, recent experimental work on laboratory organisms such as yeast, worms, flies and mice, has uncovered methods to extend both health and lifespan. Importantly, the data indicate these findings will be beneficial for human ageing.
Our scientists from the UCL Institute of Healthy Ageing will exhibit and discuss our research at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition, 2012.
