not the og anon but honestly I’d always thought that Paul was actually unhappy with his life but not motivated enough to try and change it since he was at least content. Like maybe he convinced himself he was okay with the way his life was because there was nothing that was really that bad about it, but a little deeper down he‘s never been ‘truly happy’ with his average life, and saying this out loud is what he ‘lets out’. (sorry if this didn’t make any sense, I too am autistic & ramble a lot)
