Finn Jones, Mike Coulter and Krysten Ritter on Born Again s3 set today!
I've taken a look. I don't share unofficial/paparazzi photos on this blog as a rule, BUT
Netflix Marvel: Beyond Daredevil and the Punisher
There has been a lot of recent attention surrounding the Netflix Marvel Daredevil and Punisher shows, possibly because they are the only Netflix properties/characters that Marvel has shown any desire to promote, or even acknowledge, over the past few years. As someone who watched and loved all of these shows as they came out, and has been a fan of their comics counterparts for even longer, it breaks my heart to see Marvel engineering a new audience of fans who only know the DD/Punisher component of this vibrant corner of the MCU. The only way to let Marvel know that we care about all of these shows is to watch them, talk about them, and spread the word!
With this in mind, here are the shows that Marvel, for whatever reason, apparently doesn't want you to know about, and which you're sorely missing out on if you've only watched Daredevil and Punisher:
Jessica Jones (3 seasons)
Jessica Jones, a jaded ex-superhero-turned-private-investigator, is forced to face down the terrifying supervillain who destroyed her life when he begins targeting new victims.
Luke Cage (2 seasons)
Super-strong and bulletproof from being experimented on while in prison for a crime he didn't commit, Luke Cage travels to Harlem to start over, but soon finds himself fighting a war against its criminal underworld.
Iron Fist (2 seasons)
Returning from the otherworldly city where he's lived since his parents' deaths fifteen years ago, Danny Rand is confronted with a dangerous new world of betrayals, ancient enemies, and—most deadly of all—his own long-repressed trauma.
If you haven't watched these in a while, consider this your sign to treat yourself to a re-watch. If you haven't watched them at all before, for whatever reason, consider this a recommendation. I guarantee you'll have a great time; if you liked the Daredevil show, you will love these as well. They are all available on Disney+.
Slight spoilers for Born Again (the show)
I hate that they had at least two spots in the show that could've included the other Defenders. The Hector case if they went more comic accurate and the finale, where we see the cast come together to prepare to go againts Fisk in season 2, yet there's no Luke, Danny or Jess, even Melvin would make sense, yet...nothing.
SIGH. Welp, I'm disappointed but not surprised. They have had opportunities for years to include these characters in other MCU projects, and yet here we are. And I do want to be clear—while Luke, Danny, and Jessica in particular are very dear to me (as I said in this post, I've loved these guys in the comics since before these shows were a twinkle in Jeph Loeb's eye, and Iron Fist is my favorite/second favorite Marvel superhero depending on my mood), this is true for pretty much ALL of Marvel television: Agents of SHIELD, Runaways, Cloak and Dagger, Inhumans, The Gifted, Legion... The MCU is so vast at this point that I know, logistically, it is a lot of characters to juggle, but the fact remains that they could easily fit many of them into other shows/movies, or (god forbid!) give them their own damn shows back, but for some inexplicable reason, the only one they've bothered to do this with is Daredevil. Why? Luke Cage and Iron Fist only got two seasons and were cancelled on CLIFFHANGERS, never mind the Heroes for Hire/Nightwing Restorations spin-off show they kept teasing (which would have been freaking amazing). But who cares, right? Instead of dwelling on that, let's stick our special boy Daredevil in a big movie. Let's give him a random romance with She-Hulk, instead of perhaps giving that cameo slot to Hellcat, Jen's close friend from the comics, or to Luke Cage, one of Jen's actual exes. Let's get him an entire new show that's...apparently twice as long as any of the other Disney+ Marvel shows, for some reason?
And look, I shouldn't complain. It's gotten more people to care about a character I love, which is exciting! And I'm very happy for the MCU Daredevil fans. It's just the fact that when it comes to any other characters or shows Marvel seemingly cannot be bothered to make even a fraction of the same effort that is so deeply frustrating.
Just wanted to point out that no, I doubt Foggy’s death is a possibility. There are hints he might be hurt, but killing him after having scrapped the old script to bring back Foggy and Karen would be a nonsensical move.
Now about the others! I haven’t heard a thing about Luke and Danny, but rumors suggest Jessica’s return is very probable, maybe in Daredevil S2. I’d be glad to see Jessica again no matter where they put her (as long as they stay good to her character ofc). Now I’m just daydreaming stuff that’ll never happen, but it’d be superfun to have her interact with Kate Bishop! (As in Hawkeye: Kate Bishop; loved that run.)
Good to know, thank you for this clarification! Yeah, the thought of them choosing to kill Foggy off was startling to me. The idea that he might be injured, or have a death scare (like in "Devil in Cell Block D"), would make a whole lot more sense.
"I haven't heard a thing about Luke and Danny" is the title of my post-cancellation MCU-fan memoir (in stores now).
I'm glad to hear that about Jessica! I have to roll my eyes a bit at the idea that they would feel the need to use Daredevil as a vehicle to bring her back, as if they don't think she has fans, as if she didn't also have her very own successful, three season-long show. Could they at least give her a cameo in a big blockbuster movie like they did for Matt? I also learned long ago to not believe rumors, particularly when it comes to things like this. More often than not, they're just that, and I've been led astray a few times too many by now. But I'm more than happy to daydream along with you (I loved that Hawkeye run too, and it would be amazing to see that team-up adapted)!
Here's hoping for... I don't know. Something. Anything. Good comics, at the very least.
I'd like to think I'll be able to just sense it through the ether if Luke and Danny end up making any kind of appearance in this All-New All-Different Daredevil show, but I wouldn't mind being informed by anyone who might potentially be considering watching it. I can't say it would change my mind about watching it myself, but I would do a happy, exhausted little fist-pump.
Just making it to episode 4 of #daredevilseason3 OMG just the execution alone on that prison sequence boggles the mind!
