Endangered Species Act Day 24; The Sierra Nevada Red Fox. One of the rarest foxes not to be listed as Endangered with fewer than 100 individuals. Smaller in size than low-elevation red foxes, Sierra Nevada red foxes generally weigh 2 to 4 kg (4.5 to 9 lbs.) Their fur may be red, silver phase, a cross of both with the red phase having the greyish-blonde coloration characteristic of montane foxes They are listed as a threatened Species under the Endangered Species Act. Prior to the 2010 Sonora Pass discovery, only one known remnant population of approximately 20 individuals remained in the historic range near Mt. Lassen. Prized by trappers for their soft, dense fur, sightings of the Sierra Nevada red fox began to greatly diminish by 1940.
