I Never Thought I’d Be the One Behind on My Mortgage
I used to look at people in financial trouble and think, “That’ll never be me.”
I had a steady income. I paid my bills. I wasn’t out here buying yachts and living wild.
But then life happened. A medical emergency. Hours cut at work. A few late bills that snowballed. And suddenly, that little pink envelope in the mail said “FINAL NOTICE.”
I froze. I felt ashamed. I avoided calls. I didn’t tell anyone—not friends, not family. I felt like I had failed.
But here’s what no one tells you: you can fall behind and still bounce back.
I learned (the hard way) that missing a payment isn’t the end. It’s a warning sign—yes—but not a death sentence. There are people who will walk you through it without judgment. There are programs, counselors, options. But you’ve got to open the letter. You’ve got to make the call. You’ve got to try.
If you’re reading this and you’re behind on your mortgage or rent:
Please know that you are not alone, and you are not broken.
It’s okay to be scared. It’s okay to ask for help.
Just don’t give up on your home—or yourself.
