“Why Ignoring Relationship Problems Makes Them Worse (And How Therapy Fixes It)”
“How Therapy Changed My Relationships: My Experience”
My Pre-Therapy Personal Relationships
Before I began therapy, I struggled with my relationships. I couldn’t grasp my emotions, so I tended to act on them in ways that hurt my loved ones. I would get into an argument with someone because I couldn’t communicate effectively. I would end up being distant from my family and my friends because I was scared and confused.
I also had some patterns that I didn’t even know I had. I had been pushing people away when I had too much on my plate, bottling up my stress, and sugarcoating conversations. It created an imbalance within my relationships and made me feel as if I were alone and no one understood me. I wanted to be understood and connect with someone, but I didn’t know how.
A Look at Changes I Experienced with My Personal Relationships after I Finally Began Attending Therapy
Beginning therapy puts it all into perspective. I discovered ways to identify emotions and not let them rule my life. I began communicating effectively without fear or feelings of guilt. A disagreement turned into no big deal, and I began listening more and reacting less.
Therapy has taught me healthy ways to put boundaries, have patience with myself and with people, and identify some of these patterns that were sabotaging my relationships. I noticed that my friends and family were reacting differently around me. I could have conversations with them. I could laugh with them. I could trust them again. I could finally connect with people I love.
It took some time, but I began working on my own changes and eventually became a better partner, friend, and family member. I healed within myself through therapy, and it trickled down into my relationships.
