YK2 in a nutshel?
this is a bit of a weird criticism, since i'm halfway through the series, and i'm playing them in an inverted chronological order, due to the kiwami remakes, but man by yakuza 4 the hostess minigames just really underlines how weirdly unwilling the series is to let kiryu have female friends or long term acquaintances.
like, date and yuya show up in every game, even if it's just in minor roles: we get to see date go from cop to reporter to bartender, and yuya move from host to manager to co-owner of stardust; checking in on their growth is part of the series' pleasure, the same way watching kamurocho shift and erode and rebuild itself is.
but there aren't really any female characters that get the same treatment, other than maybe ako the mamasan of earth angel. it's not like the games can't do decent female characters — akiyama's secretary hana in yakuza 4 is an absolute star, of course, and sayama in yakuza 2 was good — but they don't STICK the way the male characters do. they either die (they die *way too much*) or get shuffled offscreen, and after a certain point it feels out of character for kiryu.
this is particularly notable with the hostess clubs, because you spend so much time getting to know these women, and the games go to some lengths to frame these relationships as actually friendly and emotionally supportive (in a way that is wildly, borderline delusional with the realities of the service industry, but whatever, implausibly making friends is kiryu's whole superpower), but then just jettisons them between games in a way that feels small and pathetic, particularly as kiryu gets into his forties and is STILL entirely reliant on paying women half his age to talk to him. kiryu's been going to shine and jewel in-universe for over a DECADE, why can't we check in on the women he's befriended? why doesn't he have any female friends in their thirties?
the series being half-remade just makes the whole thing that much off-kilter, since kiwami reunited yuki and majima from yakuza 0 and it was absolutely the most glorious thing. seeing yuki go from a little baby bird of a hostess to running her own club was *exactly* the same thrill as seeing date meet his daughter's new boyfriend, but then you go into three and four and that sort of thing just evaporates. really hoping this gets better in 5 and 6!
HELLO, PLEASE LOOK AT MY GIRLS!!! MAKOTO AND SAYAMA BEING VERY CUTE TOGETHER.
Its funny how in yakuza 5 they mention Kaoru was sent to USA because she kept fucking with the police officers 😭!! I know its supossed to be because she went out with kiryu, but honestly it makes more sense its because she was actually insane in a sexy way, like in the scene where she breaks a glass with a wooden sword because she thought it was cool.
Between her doing shit like that, and Makoto wanting to pay Majima to kill people I think they would be SO insane and funny together. They were forbidden from interacting because i KNOW they would have fallen in love instantly and also been more crazy than the main characters.
Anyway, this is a drawing about a fanfic im writing where they both meet in kamurocho for very Yakuza-game reasons, the time this happens is in between yakuza 4-5. Makoto came with her son, but for reasons he gets captured. Sayama has come for an investigation (despite her boss NOT wanting her there). They meet up by coincidence and Sayama inmediately agrees on helping Makoto find her son, thus they initiate an awkward slow burn where they fall in love as they learn about eachother, save Makoto’s kiddo, and solve this very intricate yakuza-like intrigue case.
