If you've listened to my last two interviews, you may have noticed a common theme: the idea of running with whatever life hands you. In improv, that's called the "Yes, and..." rule, and it's actually come up on the pod at least three times: with Dale Travis (though we didn't call it that), John Roedel, and Jennifer Nasta Zefutie. Here's why "Yes, and..." is an improv rule: if your partner suddenly declares that you are a purple-spotted manatee on an airplane and you say, "Ehh, no I'm not," all the momentum drains right out of your scene. There's literally nowhere to go. Your partner looks bad, and you're both left trying to figure out where to go from here. If, on the other hand, you say, "Why yes, I am, and I'm hoping the attendant brings me some water," you've kept the energy flowing and given yourself something to work with. (Obviously, there are some things you SHOULD say no to—always! I'm not talking about those here.) It's a little like magic—and I don't mean that metaphorically. Dale Travis stumbled into singing when he hurt himself playing football. He had no idea it was going to take him around the world, but when his choir director suggested he major in music, he said yes. John Roedel tells a similar story, down to his wife saying, "You know, we should get married." He said yes to that, among many other things (if you're curious and missed the episode, check it out--link in bio!). And Jennifer Nasta Zefutie found herself literally unable to avoid acting, even when she was quite determined to take a break from it in law school... so she said yes. But with Storm Jorge on the horizon, this microadventure wasn’t going to be straightforward...
