Last week, the New Hampshire House approved legislation that clarifies aspects of the state's marital law. Senate Bill 394 recognizes out-of-state marriages, allows couples from other states that do not recognize marriage equality to marry in New Hampshire and changes the language in New Hampshire marital law to non-gender specific terms.
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) voiced strong support for the legislation, noting it "completes the promise of full equality for same-sex marriage couples that New Hampshire made in 2009 when it enacted its marriage equality law" by correcting unintended gaps in the law.
Rep. Michael Sylvia, a Republican Free Stater from Belmont, opposed the measure. "I have no problem with 'gay' marriage (I do object to State marriage)," he explained in a Facebook message.
"I have a problem with 'Alice in Wonderland' language," he continued. "What could possibly go wrong? Maybe a gender neutral dude will see the new Women's (gender neutral) Prison as an opportunity to upgrade 'his' accommodations?" he joked.
