We both carry handcuffs. We both intimidate and interrogate. We both promise to keep people safe. We both have dangerous jobs. We’re working class. We wear shiny black shoes. People fetishize us. There’s an intrinsic power dynamic in everything we do. We’re aware of it. Some of us are ethical. Some of us are not. We use our body, our mind, critical thinking, emotional labor and trained skill with “weapons” as part of our tool set. We share these thing in common and more. Who’s the Top in this picture? I know what the dynamic was when I flirted with him to get the photo. I know where the power resided. And. He could cuff me, tase me, shoot me or put me in jail and most likely abuse me and get away with it-despite my rights. Instead we have this rad Halloween style picture. It’s not dress up. It’s real. It’s actually a friendly, sexually charged photo. Despite his gun, the obvious simulation of stab wounds and blood dripping from my chest and mouth, and my clothing signaling my proclivities. Or perhaps because of those elements combined with his sincere smile. Who’s the Top? Power is not static and it has many nuanced layers. Tomorrow SB 233 gets voted on. The bill that determines whether sex workers can report violent crimes and carry condoms without fear of incarceration. Call your Assemblypeople today. The thing about social empowerment is, we all end up on top. ✊🏻❤️ #SB233 #marginalization https://www.instagram.com/p/ByicAdYj7oh/?igshid=i21kzrten9b6
