I’ve only got one ticket stub to share, but I went to two gigs on 16th October 1999. The first was an all dayer at the relatively newly reopened Scala, called Scalarama. Looking back it was a really solid bill - Comet Gain, Butterflies of Love, Quickspace, Rosita, and some other bands lost to history. I vaguely recall Saint Etienne offshoot Birdie being there too, but don’t quote me on that. The trouble with all dayers is that they’re never that busy earlier on - I felt a bit sorry for the bands higher up on the bill playing when the venue was still half empty.
Anyway, later on I decamped to the Astoria to see Mogwai. Come On Die Young had come out in March 1999, and this gig was probably the peak of my Mogwai fandom. I’d gone along with a guy called Rob who I knew from the Chemikal Underground message boards, who also ran a Mogwai fan site called Brightlight (which carried on running until 2015). The gig was awesome, Like Herod hurt my ears as usual, but the best bit was that because Rob knew the band he could get into the aftershow. He’d come all the way from Birmingham for the gig, so it was a pretty big deal - his name was on the guest list, and also for the aftershow. My name wasn’t on the list, but somehow I got in too. There was a lot of well known indie names milling about, but the one that sticks in my memory was of Brian Molko, who was famous for his hair, but was obviously thinning. More recent photos show him with a thick head of hair again - maybe he’s had a hair transplant or something, but back in 1999 he definitely had less hair than me, and I’m pretty much bald now.

Turkish Star Wars Film Goes On UK Tour
The notorious Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam (1982) is the “holy grail” of cult cinema. In 1982, director Çetin İnanç edited footage from Star Wars into his own film, along with music from Raiders of the Lost Ark and Flash Gordon. Now Matchbox Cineclub, Remakesploitation and Neon Harbor are teaming to tour the newly restored Turkish Star Wars 2K to the UK this September for Scalarama 2018. (more…)
