Nostalgia Critic DVD Exclusive "Turkish Rambo" Up For Free
How do you tie a full Windsor knot in your tie and then let it hang that low...?
Well, even though I'm not a big mark for the Nostalgia Critic thing, I'm in favor of anyone raising awareness about the weird and wonderful (but mostly weird) period of Turkish film-making where everything was a loose remake or repackaging of American entertainment. Couldn't watch NBC in Istanbul? Turkish Star Trek had you covered. Lucas didn't think to translate things into Türkçe for you (because he's so thoughtless)? Turkish Star Wars, baby, complete with lifted footage from some 16mm print of A New Hope spliced in.
The Turkish film industry, which they call Yeşilçam (it means "Green Pine" - sort of like how we call ours "Hollywood" but with a Turk-ier plant), has an interesting past. It plays into my endless fascination with the way other cultures interpret American stuff. So do a little research, get fascinated, think about the value American entertainment had (and still has) around the world. And while we're at it, I should mention that Turkish Rambo is one of the very few Turkish remakespoitation movies to get a legit DVD release in the U.S., although of course they had to remove all the music stolen from big-budget movies back in the day.
