Wizard of Oz AU

Drabble 1: Scarecrow

And now for something completely different~

Because I’ve written over 32k words for one fic so far for NaNoWriMo, I thought I’d take a little break with a drabble.

Pidge didn’t care for this world one bit. Sure, it was interesting enough, but their technology was all but nonexistent. And with each step they took down the road paved with yellow, almost golden bricks, they felt farther and farther away from home.

Well, the place they’d learned to call home over the past several months in space, anyway.

Pidge missed their team. They were like a family. And they’d only just found Matt. Pidge had even argued with him before they left. It was over something stupid. They couldn’t even remember it now.

Floating beside them, Rover beeped, catching their attention.

The path had been mostly deserted up until now. But just ahead, on the other side of a short, rickety-looking wooden fence, stood someone. 

Pidge dashed forward. It could have been a trick of the light, but the person’s lanky build looked familiar. Their heart fell, however, when they drew nearer. It wasn’t a person at all, but a scarecrow. He was hanging high on a stake in the center of a crossroads.

“Now where are we supposed to go?” they sighed, tearing their gaze away from the motionless scarecrow and looking to Rover, who simply beeped in response.

“Well, that way is a pretty nice way,” someone said.

Pidge blinked. There was no one else around except for-

“But it’s pleasant down that way, too,” he spoke again and Pidge looked up to see the scarecrow pointing toward one of the paths.

“That’s funny...” Pidge furrowed their brow.

“Of course, people do go both ways!” he said cheerfully, glancing down at them.

“I knew it!” Pidge studied him. “You’re the one talking.”

The scarecrow nodded and then shook his head.

“Are you just doing that to be difficult or can’t you make up your mind?” Pidge frowned. It didn’t help that the scarecrow bore a striking resemblance to a certain flirtatious paladin they knew.

“That's the trouble. I can't make up my mind.” He sighed. “I haven't got a brain.” He lifted the side of his floppy hat to show them. “Only straw.” 

“Nonsense. Without the motor cortex, speech would be impossible,” Pidge huffed.

“Uh, yeah, not familiar with that.” The scarecrow shrugged. “But if that translates to ‘brain,’ then I know plenty of people without one who do an awful lot of talking.” He winked.

“Yeah, you remind me of one of them.” They shook their head. “Anyway, what are you doing up there?”

Would anyone want to read more of this? Just taking a little break from my bb fic, which is over 57k right now (omg, how??)
