Sacred Games Review
Based off of the applauded book by Vikram Chandra, Sacred Games tells the story of the rise of crime lord Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who sets off a series of events then cryptically reveals himself to Singh a jaded cop, after being in hiding for the past 16 years.
Netflix's interpretation of this sprawling novel is a monumental cinematic success not just for an Indian series but for a gangster show. It's the Godfather meets Narcos meets Gomorrah. The series exposes the seedy criminal underworld of Mumbai with copious violence & profanity that is typical from mob stories.
Siddiqui is mesmerizing as the power and money hungry Gaitonde whose vintage retro shirts are tremendous .I really liked that the story had lots of twists and turns and that season 2 became a whole other dynamic.
The one drawback of the series is that practically all the female characters were either sex workers, victims or relegated to menial roles and devoid of a clear voice. Whilst gangster shows are notorious for silencing and exploiting females on screen it is still frustrating to see that this show is no different from others in romanticizing relentless misogyny.
All seasons are dubbed. Season 3 coming in 2021.
