ScarStrife was nearly a thing

Little-known lore about Scarlet:

In OG FFVII, Scarlet is a board member and the head of Shinra's advanced weapons research division, but Square originally wrote her as being Hojo's new assistant, a scientific prodigy in charge of helping him develop new bioweapons tech. Furthermore, they envisioned her and Cloud as having been ex-lovers engaged in a secret romance during his time as a Shinra grunt. This idea, however, was cut from the final draft.

It's a shame that Square removed this subplot, since it would add so much delicious angst and drama to the narrative. Imagine the sheer guilt that Cloud would carry with him by having feelings for the monster who destroyed Barret's home and killed his wife, helped Hojo to experiment on and torture Ifalna, and nearly murdered his childhood friend Tifa in a gas chamber on live television.
