Sour Grapes in Napoli
Some will say that they enjoy the characters of the game of football, that it makes in interesting. I agree as long as those characters are restricted to the pitch, when it comes to the owners, the constant insults and mockery between them make Serie A look like a start up league in a third world country. DeLaurentiis recently said that he could do more if he had 300M like Juventus does. Here’s the thing, he is welcome to go get that 300M. When Juventus won their first of five consecutive titles their revenues were at 195M. There is an implication here that this money was given to Juventus, that it was not earned and as long as these other owners feel that they are treated unfairly and they are owed something, they will never amount to anything.
This revenue is the direct result a new stadium which creates a professional first class fan friendly atmosphere, a management group that built a team deep as well as wide by not going for the big flashy names at first but looking at building a proper foundation. As an aside Inter, Milan and Napoli like to hit the home run ball with nobody on base while Juventus prefers to hit a bases loaded double. RBIs are more important to home runs in my books, but home runs make a splash. Some owners want to make a splash, others prefer to win titles.
DeLaurentiis should remember that Juventus management doesn’t interfere with its managers nor does it criticize it’s players in public and when they do speak about them they decency to remember their names. This proper management has created a team that can go deep into the Champions’ League and attract sponsorship. Let us also remember the the poor showing in Champions’ League by the other Italian teams have helped boost Juventus’ television revenues. Remember also the DeLaurentiis has always looked down on the Europa League. Napoli had a team that could have challenged for it and he decided that it was beneath him, like somehow there is so much silverware in the Napoli trophy room that it’s begging to be expanded. Guess what, a European trophy would have made some sponsors happy, would have given you more revenue and brought you closer to that 300M Juventus has. However, Napoli decided it wasn’t important and as Young MC said, “you go not money, you got no car, you got no woman and there you are.”
So, before DeLaurentiis and other owners complain about what Juventus has that they don’t, why not look at why they don’t have it and where they are leaving money on the table. I think it’s time for these children to grow up.
