There’s something important to be said about this scene: Ash didn’t kill Lao. He could have. It would have been insanely easy. But he simply shot his hand. This tells us one very important thing about him: he doesn’t kill indiscrimanetely or out of malice. He only kills when it’s necessary to protect someone else (like he did with Shorter), when he needs to survive (like those guards at the mental care hospital) or out of anger (as we see him doing in this episode). In this situation, Lao didn’t actually do anything wrong. He was simply trying to protect Sing. I think that, even in his state of anger, Ash recognized that and simply shot him in a way that eliminated the threat but didn’t kill. This tells us a lot about what kind of person he is.
