Sensory Gardens
ok, it’s spring now where I am so let’s talk sensory gardens--and before you skip this because you don’t have room to garden, don’t like gardening, or can’t handle the outside/creepy crawlies...there are options!
pots! if you’re not already a gardener, this might be a place to start because you can pick just a few plants and have little work to make it/care for it, and possibly it lives inside with you! pots cut down on the amount of dirt you need to deal with too, in case dirt/gloves are not good sensory experiences. you do need to pick your plants carefully though (and if it’s an inside pot you’ll need to know if you’ll need to pollinate anything yourself) different plants have different needs so try to pick ones that need the same amount of light and water! while this won’t make a huge sensory retreat, you may be able to include a couple of nice plants to touch, smell, and look at (and maybe even eat!) even if you don’t have an outdoor space or if you’re not comfortable going outside much--you can even hang a wind chime above it. plus, having a living thing (or things) to care for can be fun and calming sometimes. (you an check some of the plant lists in the next section for ideas though check to make sure the plant will not be too big for your pot!)

Relaxation bean bags: [...]Fill socks with 1-2 cups of rice (depending on the size you want to make). If desired, add 2 drops of fragrance oil for a sensory experience (try lavender for a relaxing scent).
“Mix the scent around in the socks so that it gets distributed throughout the rice. Tie the sock closed with ribbon. Choose 2-4 different types of ribbon to tie around the end of the sock. Using different textures of ribbon can add a tactile experience...” --- source
(this can be an alternative way of making sensory balls for people who don’t like the feel of balloons (you can just put the sock over the balloon if you want a filling that you can’t do with a sock like flour or playdough) or a way to make small weights)
