August Schell’s “Dark” Amber Lager

Beer Advocate: 76/100 Rate Beer: 15/100 I Say: 4/10

Boy, the folks at Rate Beer were not impressed with this one. Can’t say I completely disagree.

Poured this one in a lager glass. Or a Pilsner glass, technically? It does taper in at the top. I don’t know, who gives a shit. I poured it in the receptacle pictured and got a nice inch or so of foam. The head melted quickly, as lagers are wont to do. But I was left with a stable head slightly larger than I’m used to with lager. I’m not crazy about how this stuff smells, it’s a bit sweet and malty. All too reminiscent of some poor choices I’ve made with Steel Reserve and other high gravity frat champagnes.

Muscled past that smell of Sunday morning apologies and had myself a taste. Lands not unlike a malt liquor, it’s just a bit too sweet for a beer. But to its credit, it resolves into a much nicer lager flavor quite quickly. A half second after every sip, I found myself reminded of Yuengling. It’s a hazy, less crisp, less refined reminder, but similar enough to connect the profiles.

I could drink this stupid Midwest beer with some stupid Midwest food. Chislic, Dimock Dairy’s Ghost Pepper Jack, or some pickled fish on crackers would be just enough to make this beer taste good. It just seems like a worse version of Shiner Bock to me. I’ll have to try it out of a tap before I completely cross it off my list.
