This chapter tasted like Iron Blooded Orphans.

Man: Then, about the business deal we discussed earlier...

Nobleman: Right, I'll be counting on you for that. The quality of your product is first-class, I’m sure the knights will be pleased as well. 

Man: Thank you very much.

Nobleman: Then... how about the other goods you promised me? 

Man: Yes, that one is... another quality goods.

Man: Then.. please enjoy.

Nobleman: What a supreme beauty, hehehe. I’m going to spoil you silly.

Ledo: I was 10 years old back then. That was a sight I’ve been seeing ever since I was old enough to remember things. Without even any memories of being embraced by my parents, a man whom I didn’t know, as a release of his desire, loomed over me. For me that was the natural order of the world, the bottom of a dark and miserable gutter.  

Ledo: This nobleman was a ‘customer’ taken by my mother. A mother who gets her child to serve ‘customers’ because she needs money to buy drinks and play around with men. A father whose face I don’t even remember.

Ledo: Hey, mister. Did you buy weapons from the uncle before?

Nobleman: Now, now, that has nothing to do with you.

Guy: What are you doing here? I have no business with kids. Quick bring the person who has the “information” here.

Ledo: The person who has information is this kid.

Guy: Haa?

Ledo: You come here because you want information about a certain nobleman’s corruption, right? Mr. Information Seller. 

Guy: ...brat, you’d be sorry if this is your idea of being mischievous. You do have the evidence with you, don’t you?

Guy: ...!!! There’s no mistaking it, this crest is that nobleman’s... It’s his cufflinks, huh... where did you get this!?

Ledo: At a certain hotel suite room.

Ledo: He stroke a major deal with the arm dealer in exchange for having me. 

Guy: I see... so the evidence is yourself. That’s fine by me. Speak in details. I’ll pay you. If you have any more information, we’ll meet again.

Ledo: ...this can work. If I continue doing this, one day I’ll be able to get free.

Ledo: I need to gather more information, both in quantity and quality. I assembled a team, a network consisted of boy prostitutes who are in the same situation as me. The money is divided among everyone in the group. While selling information, I take in a number of outsiders as mediator. While paying close attention as not to expose my friends’ existence, I sell information out to the clients. While saving the money, we continue to prepare for our getaway, so that we will be able to adapt in regular society. Arranging only the parents with fake family register... the preparation take years. 

Ledo: We don’t ask for much... we just want a regular life where we can say no to the things we don’t want.

Ledo: I’ve prepared enough for me to flee by myself. However, I’ve reached this far not thanks to my power alone. That’s why we have to break free from this dark world together...

Guy: Ledo Ofen, leader of a group of boy prostitutes, the brat who’s been making money out of selling information on the elites in secret...

Ledo: How... did you find out!? Where did you get the information from... Is it one of the mediators..!?

Guy: If you want to blame someone, blame your friends. 

Ledo: What!?

Guy: In your team, there are at most 10 people right? I’ve bribed them all.

Ledo: ...don’t lie, as if I’d believe such nonsense!

Guy: Haha, should I tell you what those punks you think of as friends said? They all sing in the same tune:

Guy: “We were just following Ledo Ofen’s instruction. Without him, we wouldn’t have done anything.”

Ledo: ...Liar! They will never...!

Guy: But it’s really just as they said, no? If you weren’t around, they wouldn’t be able to do anything, and wouldn’t pose a threat either. Your half-baked intelligence is not good for us. 

Guy: I’ll have you die here.

Kanon: Ledo Ofen right?

Ledo: Right... and you are?

Kanon: I’m Kanon Maldini. Pleased to meet you, Shadow Venom. (TL: the kanji means more like “Phantom Poisonous Fang”)

Ledo: Shadow...? What the heck is that.

Kanon: There’s a rumor in the underground community. About a presence who sell shady information on nobles that cause them to fall to ruin. No one knows who or what they are, but it’s a sure thing that they exist, and when you think they’re showing their fangs, they disappear like a ghost... Who would have thought that the poisonous fangs that have been the cause of nobles’ downfall is a young boy like you... You’ve been hiding your identity really well.

Ledo: Why did you help me?

Kanon: This time we were able to get rid of some naughty nobles... Just take this as a reward. It would be a waste to lose someone of your ability in a place like this.  

Kanon: Work under me. I’ll take you until the place where you can see the sun.

Ledo: Got it... or rather should I say ‘understood’? You will be my boss after all.

Kanon: You’re bold, I see. I like it.

Ledo: How ironic. As a result of being betrayed by all of my friends, I was saved from the gutter. Then maybe I should’ve fled on my own in the first place.

Ledo: And yet in the end, I can never escape from darkness. Now as a mole, I’ve been betraying Lord Kururugi, the person who sees me as his friend, by investigating him behind his back.  

Ledo: The one who’s been playing “pretend friends” is me.

Ledo: That’s right... Schnee is not a friend, but a cover I use so I can investigate Lord Kururugi. I can do my task well because I manage to convince Schnee that I’m truly his friend.

Ledo: And yet why I feel so restless? About sniffing around Kururugi Suzaku, about betraying Schnee... Why..!?  

Schnee: Ledo!! Behind you!!

Ledo: I was careless.

Ledo: A prepare-to-die attack. They’re desperate too. Will I die just like this? But, this is fine too. Or perhaps, this is a suitable end. For a rat like me who never had real friends and couldn’t crawl myself out from the dark world.

Schnee: Ledo, you’re an important friend. I don’t want to lose you.

Ledo: What an idiot. You don’t know I’ve been spying on the person you deeply respect. 

Suzaku: ...It’s the name we assign to you guys (TL: refer to early chapters when Ledo and Schnee first learn that they’re working under Suzaku and named as Konoe Knights)

Ledo: Uwooo!!!

Schnee: Ledo!?

Ledo: What happened to me??

Schnee: You.. really know how to make people worry.

Suzaku: You hit your head in the cockpit and lost consciousness. 

Ledo: Sorry to make you worry.

Suzaku: It’s okay, as long as you’re fine.

Ledo: How mysterious. I thought I have given up on everything, and yet the moment these two appeared in my mind, I feel like I...

Ledo: ...want to live.

SIDE: SUZAKU V

Ledo: The surveillance on Kururugi Suzaku continued. While handling missions as Knight of Rounds, at side he’s assisting the new Governor Nunnally. There’s nothing ostensibly unnatural to report about Kururugi Suzaku. If any, there’s only one. A boy named Lelouch Lamperouge. The only unnatural thing that Kururugi Suzaku has done since coming to Area 11 is that one time when he’s alone with Lelouch.

Ledo: ...should I check on it..?

Ledo: Lelouch is a puzzling existence. The information we got on him is too clean.

Ledo: Once you’re conducting an investigation on someone, you will stumble upon one or two hidden information. Yet, there’s nothing logically questionable in his background. Then there’s that Secret Intelligence Service that seems to be receiving commands from the Emperor. For some reason they seem to be monitoring this boy named Lelouch Lamperouge. They might have something to do with that unnaturally clean background of his. In this school there are also Lord Alstreim and Lord Weinberg. Within the area I sneaked into, I see no suspicious acquaintance.

Ledo: ...? 

Ledo: How strange... it should be class time now. As far as I checked, there should be no special event whatsoever. And yet what’s with this commotion...?

Boy: Hm? Hey, you, you haven’t gotten your hat yet?

Ledo: Huh? No, I...

Ledo: ...sorry, what is this all about?

Boy: Eh? You don’t know? This is one of President Milly’s impulses, the one who always holds inexplicable events. And this time it’s her graduation event.

Ledo: Student Council President, Milly Ashford. Certainly in the report it’s written that she possesses extraordinary character, but I didn’t expect it to this extent...

Ledo: So, what’s the event now?

Boy: Take this hat from someone of the opposite sex, then put your own hat on that person. Then it will be mandatory for you two to be a couple. Kind of wacky, isn’t it...

Ledo: ..wait a second. What’s with that exchange just now...?

Ledo: ...a different person? Is he a body double? How strange. Should I look into it... Wait. From the intelligence I gathered, that place is the base of operations for the Secret Intelligence Service. I should avoid confrontations. 

Ledo: However, the fact that Lelouch entered that place, could mean he has some sort of connection with the Secret Intelligence Service. If it’s true, then Kururugi Suzaku as well...

Ledo: I witnessed a scene where Lelouch Lamperouge using his power, I’m sending you the recorded video of the occurrence.

Kanon: ...this is truly surprising. There’s a human being who possesses such ability... However, it matches with the reports from other investigators. We can only accept it as the truth. Does Kururugi Suzaku seem to be related in any way?

Ledo: It’s still unclear. However, I’ve confirmed that Lelouch has access to the Secret Intelligence Service’s base. 

Kanon: And his relationship with Kururugi Suzaku is also under suspicion...

Ledo: Yes.

Ledo: In the first place, even though he’s an Honorary Britannian, it’s still unprecedented for a Numbers to be a Knight of Rounds. There must be something more to this.

Kanon: Indeed. I’ll report this to His Highness Schneizel. Please continue to look into Kururugi’s surroundings. 

Ledo: Yes, My Lord. Also... Kanon-san, this is just a what-if scenario... but the matter about Kururugi being connected to the Emperor, how’s His Highness Schneizel going to handle it?

Kanon: I’m not sure myself... but it won’t be a matter he’s going to brush off.

Kanon: Why did you ask?

Ledo: Eh...? Indeed, why did I want to know about that? Things like what’s going to happen to Lord Kururugi... 

Ledo: I deeply apologize for crossing my line... Yes. I’ll keep it in mind. Well, then.

Schnee: Ledo? It’s Schnee. We got an order to sortie. In Area 11, a riot occurred at southern part of Boso Peninsula.

Ledo: Is it Black Knights?

Schnee: Most likely. There’s a great number of KMF used in the riot.

Suzaku: I’ll repeat the content of the mission.  We are to disable every KMF units. 

Suzaku: The suppression of the riot itself will be done by the police. The government administration’s policy is to lessen the death counts in this riot as many as possible. 

(On Schnee’s unit: Vincent Snipe. On Ledo’s unit: Vincent Blaze)

Ledo: A rather gentle request, isn’t it. Is it the new governor’s doing? 

Suzaku: Ever since the “1 Million Zero” incident, there has been a growing antiphaty against Britannia and sympathy for Black Knights. The officials just don’t want to provoke the masses any more than this.

Ledo: They sure make a rather impossible demand. 

Schnee: Don’t be like that, Ledo. There’s nothing better than to avoid unnecessary bloodsheds. 

Ledo: I’ll obey it. If it’s my mission, then I’ll do whatever I’m ordered to... Even if it’s to shed blood unnecessarily!

Suzaku: We’ll encircle them from three direction and push them back! Proceed! 

Rioters: Return Japan to us! You piece of junk!!

Ledo: ...how difficult. In this kind of situation, we’re only allowed to bring down the KMFs. What is Lord Kururugi’s thinking...

Ledo: The bottom of society. The weak and unsalvageable lots. Drifts of dissatisfaction. It’s not that I don’t understand their frustration. As I was in their position once...

Schnee: Somehow... Suzaku-san doesn’t seem lively. Ledo: Suzaku-san huh. You’re really simple, through and through. Schnee: S-shut up. Ledo: He’s returning to his homeland. I bet he’s feeling sentimental. Schnee: Even though he’s returning to the place he was born and raised? Ledo: Just think of it this way... if Idaho was occupied by Europia, would you want to return there? Schnee: ...I can’t imagine, what it feels like for one’s homeland to be occupied by other nations...

Ledo: Schnee... do you have a fever or something? Before, at this point you would’ve always said something like “Don’t say things that bring bad luck!” and gotten angry. Schnee: Well excuse me! Even I can understand that we’re just discussing about a 'what if’ situation!  Ledo: ‘Kay, my bad. Recently he became softer around the edge... is it because of Lord Kururugi’s influence? Schnee: Oh right. Next would you like to come to my hometown again, Ledo? The other time it was so chaotic we could barely relax. Ledo: Then you’ll also invite Suzaku-san, and see how it goes with the three of us talking about various things... leave me out of it.

Suzaku: Emperor Charles replaced three things from Lelouch’s memory. First, the existence of his younger sister, Nunnally (Rolo is installed to act as the younger brother to fill in that blank)  

Suzaku: Then, his memory as Zero. Lastly, his memory as Britannia’s prince. Though I tried to provoke Lelouch at first hand... In the end I couldn’t get any confirmation that his memory has returned...

Suzaku: Sorry, Nunnally. Seems it turned out to be a misunderstanding... Nunnally: It’s okay... the air was similar so I was surprised... Uhm... then, let’s meet at Area 11.

-The day the new Governor Nunnally arrived at Area 11- 

Suzaku: Gone...!? You mean the Black Knights?! Xingke: Yes... We also just confirmed it a short while ago. I hope with this you can understand that our country holds no hostility towards Britannia.  Suzaku: Zero is gone too!? Xingke: It appears so. His KMF is nowhere to be found after all.

Gino: We've been had. Anya: Want to take revenge? Suzaku: ...of course ....Is this Ledo?

Ledo: We’re already leaving the Pacific Ocean. Lord Guilford and Glaston Knights have sortied first as the vanguard.  Suzaku: Roger. Ledo and Schnee, wait for our arrival and then join the front line as the second team. Ledo: Yes, My Lord.

Suzaku: What... Anya? Anya: Memento. Squad Leader-san. Gino: It’s rare to see Suzaku acting like a proper superior isn’t it? Suzaku: ...is it really that surprising? Gino: Well, around the time you joined Knight of Rounds, there were times you acted like a lone wolf. Whatever you do, you go ahead by yourself. But it feels like you changed a bit nowadays.  Suzaku: Changed? Me? Gino: I don’t think it’s a bad thing though? In this world, there are a lot of things you can’t do alone after all.

Gino: Like the upcoming battle, for example. Suzaku: ...guess you’re right. Certainly, I’ve lost many things. My homeland, my irreplaceable person, my best friend... However, there must be something that I gain too.     Gino: Well then... how about the Knight of Rounds go for launch too!

-Over the Pacific Ocean. New Governor Nunnally’s escort fleet-

Gino: Come now, it’s time for some spanking!!

Gino: Anya... don’t use that anymore, get it? It’ll be bad if we kill the governor, don’t you think? Anya: I was protecting her though... Suzaku: Lloyd-san, how about Lancelot?  Lloyd: The preparation is completed! Come immediately!

Cecile: Lancelot Conquesta, take off!

Suzaku: Zero has came to abduct Nunnally. However, there isn’t any report from the secret intelligence office. Is the enemy Zero or Lelouch... Whichever it is, what I must do won’t change. Save Nunnally and capture Zero, that’s all there is.

Ledo: Don’t miss. Schnee: I know. I won’t make mistakes like hitting the governor’s ship.

Schnee: Ledo! How’s the situation!?  Ledo: It seems Guren Nisshiki that was pushed back once is now equipped with a float unit and returned to the front line. Schnee: What the hell! Ledo: Was it about equal with Lord Kururugi... He seems to have abandoned his fight with the Guren and now is heading to rescue Governor Nunnally!

Ledo: Like hell I’ll let you!

Schnee: Seriously, you... I got a fright! You went in knowing there’s one more enemy didn’t you? So that he targeted you instead of Lord Kururugi....  Ledo: Eliminating even just one more of Lord Kururugi’s obstacles should be the priority. Moreover, I was planning to trust my back to you anyway. Schnee: It makes me happy to know that you trust my skill but... sometimes it feels like you risk your life awfully easily. Ledo: ...

Ledo: ...we can only go this far. For the rest, we have no choice but to leave it to him. Schnee: If it’s Suzaku-san, then he will be able to carry it out.  ...Hey, Ledo. I know that you don’t like to talk much about your origin. And there’s nothing wrong with it. There’s no need for humans to lay bare everything about themselves. Ledo: What is it? Drop the formal talk and stop beating around the bush. 

Schnee: You’re an important friend for me, Ledo. I don’t want to lose you. Even though there probably isn’t much we can do for Suzaku-san, I think we should be able to support him even a little. If it’s me and Ledo, we can do it. Ledo: ...please spare me this ‘friendship’ stuff. Schnee: You’re always quick to get like this... I’m speaking from my heart here.

Ledo: Unfortunately I was born like this. But... thanks anyway.

??: I just got a contact from our spy in Area 11. Kururugi Suzaku seems to have come into contact with a student named Lelouch Lamperouge. Kururugi also deepens his contact with the secret intelligence bureau. The young man named Lelouch is an object of Emperor’s research, as well as “a case of mysterious power”. Also, I heard that it may have some kind of relation with Kururugi assuming the position of Knight of Seven.    Kanon: Got it. 

Kanon: I’ll relay the information to His Highness Schneizel. Keep monitoring Kururugi Suzaku.  Ledo: Yes, My Lord. Schnee... I’m sorry but, I’m not the kind of person whom you can call a friend...

Schnee: Even so, I apologize! Also... umm... Does Lord Kururugi already have plans for this vacation?  Suzaku: ? Schnee: This may be strange as an apology but... I want to invite you to my parents house in Idaho... Suzaku: Say again?

Schnee: Though it’s from the countryside, the chef’s dish which used the vegetables from our territory has a good reputation. I’d like you enjoy them, Lord Kururugi!

Schnee: Because I’ve caused great inconvenience to Lord Kururugi in Belarus-Poland, so...! Suzaku: Fu fu. Schnee: ? Lord Kururugi? Suzaku: Okay, Schnee. I’ll accept your invitation. Schnee: Thank you very much! Suzaku: I’m the one who should be grateful. The last time I spend my holidays with someone... I can’t even remember when.

Schnee: I’ll introduce them to you, Lord Kururugi.  Himmel: Welcome! I’m Himmel Hecksen. Thank you for inviting me today. Himmel: Come here, Snow. Go greet Lord Kururugi.

Himmel: I’m sorry, she’s usually a cheerful one. Schnee: ...What’s wrong, Snow? Lord Kururugi won’t bite, you know? Snow: Why are the three of you speaking politely to an Eleven? 

Himmel: Snow! What are you saying in front of Lord Kururugi!? Snow: But Father and Mother always say that “There’s no way an eleven can be a Knight of Round, he must have used some kind of shameful method”! Himmel: That’s...!

Himmel: Please allow me to be honest. We’re not welcoming you here. You are certainly someone of high position as a Knight of Round, but when it comes down to it, you’re an Eleven. We cannot from the bottom of our hearts pay our respect to a Numbers. I’m fully aware that we can be punished for this act of disrespect. 

Suzaku: ...I understand. After all, this is the natural discriminatory mentality that has taken its root in this country. It is to change this mentality, that I aim to be a Knight of One.   Schnee: Stop saying whatever you please!

Schnee: You can’t pay respect to Lord Kururugi because he’s not a Britannian, you say? That has nothing to do with anything! Lord Kururugi saved me even though he had to sacrifice himself to do it! Such insults to the one who saved your son’s life...!! Himmel: It’s a given for Numbers to protect a noble’s life. Schnee: Easy for you to say. But in reality, how many people are there who can protect others life! Himmel: There’s one in front of you. Your father here is the lord of Hecksen territory, do you realize how many people’s lives I’m protecting?

Schnee: Father... are you seriously saying that? To claim that you’ve been protecting the lives of people in an area that has never been exposed to war even once... Himmel: What did you say? Suzaku: Schnee... Schnee: My sincere apology, Lord Kururugi. I never know that my family are such embarrassment of human being.  Himmel: Wha-! Snow: Big brother... Schnee: Let’s go, Lord Kururugi, I’ve prepared the room for you. It doesn’t matter that Father and the others aren’t welcoming you or whatever. I’m the one who invited you. Himmel: Wait, Schnee! Our talk isn’t over yet!

Schnee: No. It’s over, Father. No matter what anyone says, I respect and feel grateful toward Lord Kururugi for having saved my life.  - *knock sfx* Suzaku: Come in.

Schnee & Suzaku: ... Schnee: That... err... Suzaku: ...It’s as you said, Schnee... Schnee: Eh? Suzaku: It was a delicious dinner that utilized the ingredients’ flavors. Schnee: Th-thank you very much! I’m glad that it suits your taste! Suzaku: You finally smiled. You’ve been apologizing all the way here. Also... you invited me here because there’s something you want to tell me, right?  Schnee: Sigh... I'm really no match you, Lord Kururugi. 

Schnee: Lord Kururugi, you told me that you fought because you had an ideal you wanted to fulfill. Is it also because of that ideal, that you’re standing on the battlefield now?  Suzaku: ...it’s probably a bit different. Certainly I used to have an ideal. But that ideal had fallen from my hands and scattered on the ground. Now in order to collect even the tiny bit of that scattered ideal, it’s like I’m struggling in the mud....  

Schnee: Was that ideal something that’s so precious to you? Suzaku: Yes. It was something irreplaceable to me. Schnee: Then, please order me to help you in “that”! I’ve been thinking, since Lord Kururugi has an ideal, then for me, what kind of ideal I want to fulfill, and so... 

Schnee: I have decided that I will follow you, no matter who the enemy is.  Even if they’re fellow Britannian, or an old friend, I will fight them without hesitation. Would you let me assist you in gathering that “scattered ideal”?

Schnee Hecksen: A boy of Britannia nobility origin who’s assigned under Suzaku’s direct supervision. He has strong prejudice against Numbers, not because of his own will but due to his parents’ teaching. A character who doesn’t have his own firm belief and is easily influenced by others.

Ledo Ofen: Suzaku’s direct subordinate, one of Konoe Knights. Contrary to Schnee, he’s a calm boy who judge things from the whole aspect. He takes interest in Suzaku’s past, and believes there’s a reason why the Honorary Britannian Suzaku became a Knight of Round. 

Schnee’s Sutherland: Light grey themed. Equipped with high precision aiming system on the cockpit's right side as extended attachment, which is mainly used as the sniper rifle’s support.

Ledo’s Sutherland: Deep grey themed. Equipped with experimental Blaze Luminous generator on its left arm, its weapon is variable assault riffle with bayonet attached.
