hi- i'm lee! i just finished my sophomore year in high school and, as an aspiring md, have been looking at combined/accelerated programs like your's. (i feel pretty strongly about medicine and think a program like this is the right fit for me.) i was wondering if you had any advice on the application process or if you could tell me about the activities/classes/etc that most helped you when you applied? thank you so much and good luck with your classes!
The admissions process to my combined B.A./M.D. program is very holistic. There is not just one concrete thing that will guarantee admission into programs like these, or really any medical school. With that being said, there are plenty of things that you can do to make you stand out as an applicant:
- Extracurriculars! Making the choice to enter medical school straight from high school is a HUGE decision. Often combined programs like to see that applicants have had enough experience with shadowing or volunteering in hospital related settings to ensure that the applicant has enough solid background to make a decision such as this. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need 200+ hours of shadowing experience, but that you are exposing yourself to enough aspects of medicine that you can feel confident in making this decision. I was very involved in high school (I’m talking orchestra, theatre, leadership in various clubs, volunteering on the weekends, etc) and was able to put all of this on my application.
- Classes: I took as many advanced classes as I could in high school that would strengthen my GPA. However, as I said, there isn’t one thing that can guarantee an admission or rule out an admission. GPA isn’t everything, so just try your best in your classes. :)
If offered an interview to a combined program, the biggest piece of advice I can give is to be confident in your abilities to succeed. I applied twice to this program; I was offered an interview the first time but was not offered admission. (However, the interview process changed the second time I applied.) Nevertheless, I was SO nervous for my first interview and very unprepared. The second time I applied, I was much more relaxed and confident in myself, and I actually had fun during the interview. Remember to be yourself and to smile!
That’s all the advice I can think of off the top of my head! I hope this helps, and as always feel free to message me for more information. Good luck!
