Historian Tim Bouverie Explores the Complex Dynamics of WWII Alliances in New Book

This is a fully-fledged scholarly book (probably the first I’ve read since bolting from academia a few years ago), complete with footnotes - actual footnotes, not endnotes, in-line citations, or worse! It deals with true historical minutiae: the struggles of Britain’s book publishing industry during World War II and the issues surrounding what was published.

The challenges the industry faced were enormous, starting with shortages of paper and skilled labor (printers and binders), and were exacerbated by the presence of some truly dunderheaded government officials, notably Sir Kingsley Wood, Chancellor of the Exchequer from May 12th, 1940, until his death on September 21st, 1943, who “was not a bookish man,” as Holman puts it. At the same time, British publishers found themselves under pressure to serve the needs, perceived or real, of a huge variety of interest groups: the Government (which worked hard but not always successfully to avoid anything that appeared to be censorship); the armed forces; medical, engineering, and science students; the general reading public in Britain; and readers overseas (including the U.S.; Holman paints a somewhat discouraging picture of Anglo-American relations in this context). It’s remarkable how much did get published. There are also sections on book and dust-jacket design and on the various ways that books were gotten into people’s hands.

Tell us about Atompunk My name is Bob Beard and I work at ASU's Center for Science and the Imagination on a project called Hieroglyph, which explores the intersection of science, technology arts and society. 

I've been very interested in steampunk's explosion in popularity over the past decade as (perhaps) a social commentary on today's disposable technology and I am curious as to what Atompunk might be saying as well.

As such, I'd love to chat with you about your fandom, what brought you to it and how/why you perform it. When do you think Logan's birthday is?

March.  

His old MySpace profile has him listed as a Pisces, but I completely reject that.  He’s an Aries if I’ve ever seen one, so I would go with late March.  

Canonically, it’s confusing.  He says in ATTtD that the party is three months late or nine months early.  Which from the air date, would put his birthday in February, but he’d already said earlier in the episode that it wasn’t February (got a vowel right), so March seems to be the only conclusion.  Maybe when they wrote the script, they thought it would be airing in June?
