The Rookery LaSalle Street Sign, Chicago, IL. The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned for three days in October of 1871. The fire killed up to 300 people, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles of the city and left more than 100,000 residents homeless. Terra-cotta turned out to be flame resistant and adequately protect structural metal beams and other vulnerable areas. Terra-cotta was prominently used throughout the golden period of the Chicago School of Architecture, applied by the likes of Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, and John Root. The famed Rookery Building on LaSalle Street features a delicate tracery work only possible in the medium of terra-cotta.
