100 Years of Roosevelt High School and Library

Roosevelt High School opened in fall of 1922 as an experimental combined junior/senior high, serving students from seventh to twelfth grades. When planning began for the school, it was referred to as the Nokomis High School--city high schools at the time were consistently named after their district (East, Central, South, and West). But the Minneapolis School Board believed it would be “inappropriate to call a high school after a mythical figure such as Nokomis,” a grandmother figure in traditional Ojibwe stories and in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, The Song of Hiawatha. Neighborhood residents wished for the school to be renamed after Thomas Jefferson, but the School Board voted to name the new school Roosevelt, after 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. Their mascot is a bear and their nickname is the Teddies.

While the Roosevelt Library branch across the street from the school didn't open until 1927, the library got its early start in the high school. When the library opened in 1923 it was one of three school branches in the city, and served not only students, but also neighborhood residents. As the population of the Nokomis area grew, so too did the need for a standalone library. Minneapolis Public Library purchased a parcel of land across from the school and the new library opened in February 1927. Meanwhile, the Roosevelt High School library continued to thrive under the direction of head librarian Augusta Bjeldanes, as a resource for school students, and one of the largest and highest circulating high school libraries in the Midwest.

Minneapolis’ Only Boys State Hockey Champions

On March 7, 1970, Southwest High School became the first and only Minneapolis high school to win the boy’s state hockey tournament. Undefeated Southwest faced undefeated Edina High School in the championship game. The Minneapolis team held off their suburban neighbors for a 1-0 victory in overtime.

Edina, which won the championship in 1969, came back to claim the state title again in 1971.

Margaret Lynskey, Feminist

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year for 2017 is feminism. Feminism first appeared in an English dictionary in 1841 with the definition “the qualities of females.” Today’s definitions read: “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes” and “organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests.”

Jump back 100 years to 1917 and the vocational predictions of the Minneapolis West High School senior class. Among the more common vocations (violinist, journalist, clergyman) was an uncommon vocation: Feminist, given by a classmate to Margaret Lynskey “U.C Dramatic Group, Girls’ League, Cautious, Athletic, Capable, FEMINIST.” 

Following Lynskey through the newspaper archives, it appears she lived up to her feminist title, pursuing opportunities to promote girls’ education and female equality. Lynskey graduated from the St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1921 and worked as a school nurse in the Minneapolis Public Schools from 1922 to 1965. She spent many years as a Girl Scout leader. In 1938 Lynskey and a friend Ruth Sampson, rented a car and drove on a 3,600 mile tour of the British Isles, systematically and adventurously touring the remotest places inaccessible by train. She was a guest speaker at the Business Women’s Club in 1939. In 1955, Lynskey became one of the first special service teachers in the school system, a position which combined the work of the school nurse and social worker. She retired in 1965 and died in June, 1977 at the age of 77.
