i feel sometimes like my thesis talking about tumblr as an effective entrypoint into social justice and ethnic studies type academia was somewhat flawed cuz i was referring to Discourse Culture without realizing that i’m super insulated from it cuz i just never bothered to get involved with that side of tumblr and so therefore my experience with it is necessarily limited. at the same time though one of the core critiques of my thesis was saying while tumblr is an ENTRYPOINT therein lies a danger when ppl get hip-deep in pop cultural social justice terms such as “cultural appropriation,” they fundamentally mishandle the point of CA critique.... like those tumblr posts floating around which say “appreciating culture is ok! purity culture/saying you can’t Associate with anything outside your culture is Wrong and dangerous!” like..........

if we’ve reached that point in the discourse we’ve at a base level totally passed over the critique that should be CENTERED in the discussion surrounding cultural appropriation, which is: WHY? why does whiteness want to possess this? it’s not enough to say blackness is “cool” - that’s certainly a valid and true dynamic, but WHY is blackness cool if we live in a white supremacist culture that hates black bodies? the important interrogation isn’t WHEN is it acceptable to share cultures it’s where does the desire to possess come from? what racial dynamics are at play? how is cultural appropriation a tactic of white supremacy, why is it important, how does it manifest in insidious ways in everyday culture, what are its historical precedents? and from there my thesis went on to explore cultural appropriation as an extenuation of the settler colonial cycle, exploring how the US as a settler state is just as vital to the modern phenomenon of cultural appropriation as much as its white supremacist/antiblack/chattel slavery origins are (and how those systems are all necessarily connected)

the more i reflect on my thesis the more i wish i’d had the time and resources and precision to really delve into the pedagogical aspect, the idea of Reaching Out and trying to Engage discourse and sort of. stop it and interrogate it. the important thing in ethnic/settler studies is to Interrogate. i mean my thesis was even titled UNSETTLING THE SETTLER like...... and yet somehow discourse blogs on tumblr can spiral down this unending paradox of claiming that everyone should Chill while at the same time enumerating continual and constant Problematical concepts and aspects and people and it’s like...... there’s so much dense research and writing and learning and teaching and Work that can be done here which i only barely broached upon. how does one Do this

I haven't actually posted anything recently. I apologize. School and Volleyball are very stressful. I had a game Friday, Tuesday and I have one later today. i read a really good article recently about purging the word “savage” from our vocabularies particularly in this moment of a white supremacist resurgence, and it reminded me of the class i took on us militarization where my prof asked us to examine the way we speak and the words we use and try to de-militarize our own vocabulary (which is functionally impossible given that english is like...fundamentally a colonialist imperialist language but she was talking relatively benign things like “shoot” “i bombed that test” etc etc stuff like that). in a general sense i worry that for some policing language like that becomes a source of shame and guilt but like i do think it’s a valuable and important vector of personal and political transformation to be more cautious about the words we use [shrug emoji]
