SCHRÖDINGER’S BI / BIDOX

(Plaintext: Schrödinger’s Bi / Bidox)

Definition: When you’re simultaneously bi(sexual/romantic/etc.) and not bi, for whatever reason. This falls under the Schrödinger’s Identity umbrella, and is intentionally vague to be interpreted by each user. This is inclusive of all good faith identification.

This concept stemmed from a lighthearted conversation that was had in a shared Discord server and was originally suggested by @elliott-mogai​ as ‘Schrödinger’s Lesbian,’ or when you’re simultaneously a lesbian and not a lesbian.

the bisexual is in the box, or the closet (but that analogy does not work perfectly), or on their couch in their pajamas binge-watching netflix by themselves. so long as they are in the box or the closet or on the couch, they are both straight and gay at the same time (they are not bisexual; everyone knows that bisexuals don’t exist). as soon as the box is opened, or they come out of the [physical] closet, or get up off their couch, and begin to date someone, they are either straight or gay. they were always straight or gay. what is a bisexual?

Yeah, though tbh this is a textbook case of Straight ‘til Proven Gay in action. Both Kaidan and Garrus tell personal stories about a woman they used to know, but nowhere in either story do they actually SAY that they are or are not interested in men. The audience (and by extension Shepard) assumes that they’re straight, but there’s actually no evidence either way. 

I’m not saying that there should have been an aside somewhere in Kaidan’s story about Rahna that he’s also into dudes; that would have felt out of place, since the romantic interest on his part wasn’t really the focus of the story. It was about how he stuck up for this specific person he cared about, and the attempt backfired on him because he lost control. The romance was a side note. 

But what I’m saying is that, based solely on that story, we don’t actually *know* that Kaidan (or Garrus) is straight or not. That’s just an assumption we’re making. 

Of course if somebody wants to rp Shepard as assuming Kaidan’s straight until ME3, I don’t see anything wrong with that. Individual people make mistakes, and those mistakes can make for good stories. I’m just talking about fandom’s response and how it doesn’t quite line up with the facts, because heteronormativity and stuff.
