He might still have that ugly blue shirt for sentimental reasons buried in a drawer
I love that idea! I mean, if ever a garment was steeped in nostalgia, wouldn’t it be this hideous thing Zach wore during Chris’s visit?
But I have to say I love even more the possibility that Chris stole the t-shirt, stuffing it in his suitcase before he left for L.A.
He probably meant to use it in an elaborate prank eventually, something that would be more hilarious than just swiping it. It’s just so awful and instantly recognizable, and he’d had way too much fun scoffing at Zach for wearing it in the first place. He might have pondered getting someone to make an ugly pillow out of the thing, so he could have it casually tossed onto his couch the next time Zach was in town.
But he keeps it instead. When Zach mentions misplacing it (all annoyed about it too, because apparently it was some kind of available-for-one-day-only t-shirt he snagged from a hipster website and he can’t find it even on eBay now) Chris just looks innocent and says, “It’s only a t-shirt man. You’ve got like a million other ones, right?”
Years later, Chris still has it in a drawer, carefully folded. Sometimes he spots it when he’s rearranging stuff, making room for swag designers send him, but somehow he never gets rid of it. And sometimes he uncovers it when he’s bone tired from a week of airports and press tours, and rooting around for something cozy to throw on. He’ll grab something else, of course, but not before he brushes a fingertip over the soft blue material.
Occasionally when he finds it he’ll pause for a few moments too many, thinking maybe he’ll actually wear it this time -- as a joke of course. He could text Zach a photo of him sporting it and add the message, “Remember the one that got away?” But however he rediscovers it, for however long he hesitates, he usually just runs his hand lightly over the textured pattern once or twice before he shuts it away again.
