'Did what he had to’...? Was Scion under the impression Star killed Lancer? And from the sound of it, he thought it was the right thing to do. Boy he wouldn’t like hearing this.
“U-Um... I have a confession....” Star couldn’t meet Scion’s eyes, already guessing what his reaction would be. “I-I didn’t actually kill Lancer. He’s still searching for the catalyst after it left Nii-san’s body; nobody knows where it is now. A-And I told Kazuya he wasn’t allowed to kill Lancer-san. I can’t justify killing him, e-even if he’s here to destroy us...”
“Ludger.” Star didn’t have to see Scion’s face to know he was upset. But he did jump a little once Scion’s hands grabbed his shoulders and forced him to maintain eye contact. “He’s here to destroy you. And Julius, and Kazuya, and everyone else in the world. Make all the sacrifices you have made to this point meaningless. If you can’t kill him, then don’t stop someone else.”
“B-But that still doesn’t justify killing him!” Star’s objection was weak at best. Deep down, he knew his stance was irrational: the Ludger they were talking about, Lancer, had nothing but hostile intentions for being here. And most people would be rightfully resentful of a man who shot them multiple times and then shot them in the head to end their misery. But despite all that, Star couldn’t justify giving the order to put a target on Lancer’s back.
“It does justify it. If you gave him the option to walk away, and he didn’t take it then what else is there to do? Think about everything that would be lost with your world—”
Not much. Star thought. At least, when the subject pertained to himself. He was the Ludger who went wrong. Lancer had every reason to want to kill him. He didn’t deserve to live-- that’s why he told Lancer about him killing Jude and the others. Everyone would be happier if I died he’d told himself in he moment (and to this very second).
Out of nowhere, the hardened grip on Star’s shoulders loosened. Those same hands instead slid down to his back, bringing him close. “I can’t lose you too.” What was once a heated tone became a heartfelt request.
“Scion-san...” Star couldn’t think of what to say. The idea that Scion was upset because he was afraid of losing him wouldn’t wrap itself around Star’s head. But he had enough sense to return the embrace. To show Scion his feelings weren’t in vain.
Kika’s Explanation: Scion was another Ludger that Star met lo these many years ago. Initially they were at best acquaintances, but the two slowly became close to the point that Scion started getting protective of Star because poor boy sure got attacked a lot. Most notably the time Star got shot in the head and (nearly) died by another a different Ludger known as Lancer.
Because of Lancer’s actions and his reasons for attacking Star, Kazuya (Ludger’s partner) really wanted to kill Lancer. But Star forbade it and confessed this to Scion. He knew he’d be met with an adverse reaction, but he didn’t expect Scion’s reason for getting upset to be due to him not wanting to lose his good friend. Thus, despite the argument getting kind of heated, Star looks back with that memory fondly as he remembers how much Scion truly cared about him.
