Neil Gaiman is perhaps least-known for his interest in SCOBY-s (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast), but that will no doubt change now

It's a podcast to fall asleep to. John Moe interviews people on subjects they can be dull about and witter on endlessly. For the rest of the world, me droning on about bagel-making, beekeeping and water kefir grains will put them to sleep. Only here on Tumblr will it be appreciated.

Or, possibly, not.

I think it's interesting that there's so many bacteria and mushrooms, moulds and fungi that are good delicious and many that are bad dangerous. This mushroom tastes delicious and this one will liquify your organs. This blue mould on your bread will make you sick and this blue mould in your cheese is a delicacy (ymmv). This yeast makes bread and beer. This type makes you sick though. Yeast is everywhere btw don't worry about it. When we do this thing on purpose it's fermentation. But if you're not careful about this other thing it's botulism. This is SCOBY and Mother of Vinegar which looks kinda gross but is helpful and good. This fuzzy colorful mould looks kinda cool actually but that's the yucky unhealthy one except when it's this really specific one on some cheeses. But not others. This guy found a mould that can kill bacteria which helped save many lives. These other guys found mushrooms that will make you see things.

been growing my own symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast in a jar. so i drew it. the scoby. it is happily floating in its own made kombucha.

Embarking on a new adventure!

My colleague brought me a scoby to work today. I don’t know the first thing about making kombucha, but I drink it daily and I’ve been thinking about doing this for years.

Here are some blooms - the lilies are just about to pop. They are a gorgeous dark orange/red 😻😻😻😻

And an orchid. The FIRST orchid I have ever kept alive, and she’s blooming!!!!!
