You sat at your desk between classes, trying to grade the test you had given out the other day, but it was hard to focus. Alex had called and said he was coming to the school. He usually never gave a heads up on his visits so you were anxious to see what this was about. You heard the faint crunch of gravel and took a glance out the window to see Alex’s car pull to a stop outside. Suddenly you were a teenager again, you jumped up completely abandoning your work and raced to meet Alex in the main hall.
He was leading his little brother, Scott, down the three stairs down from the foyer to the hall by the neck -- the kid in question had gauze around his eyes acting as a blindfold and was commenting on the school, “Smells pretty old in here,” He muttered in a bored voice as he stepped onto the first step, “Is this a school or a museum?”
“One more,” Alex was looking down, he hadn’t noticed you waiting for them at the base of the stair, making sure Scott didn’t trip. It had been a few years since you had seen Scott, but the kid looked the same, so much like Alex yet completely different, “And last one.” The boys settled on the floor, “There you go.” Alex’s head moved up and his eyes scanned the room, smiling when they landed on you, “I’ll be right back.” He told his brother. He began to walk away from Scott before stopping -- his hand still on the younger Summers’s neck, “Don’t move.” Alex ordered.
He released his hand from Scott’s neck, dropped the duffel bag he was carrying, and walked over to you, picking you up to kiss you without stooping, “Hey doll,” He whispered into your lips.
“You’re hair gets longer every time I see you,” You laughed and he set you down, “when are you going to cut it?”
“Never,” He smirked at me, wrapping his arms tighter around you waist. His eyes were lit with playfulness, “‘cause I know how much it bugs you.” You placed your hands on the thin blue material of his shirt and hummed. you hugged him and put your head on his chest.
“Why’s Scott here?” You asked as you watched the younger Summers turn his head around at the slightest noise, “And why is he blind folded? And follow up to that, will I get to see him run into a wall?” you looked up at Alex with wide eyes and he kissed your forehead. You weren’t going to get over the fact of how… suburban he looked from when you first met him. He went from leather jackets, jeans, and dark T-shirts to khakis, dress shirts, and beige canvas jacket, sunglasses pushing the bangs out of his eyes. His brother looked more like he did when Alex was younger, the drab olive jacket and blue shirt with red and white stripes in the middle, and ripped jeans.
“Scott and I are more alike than I thought. His mutation developed.” Alex explained, “They’re kinda like my plasma blasts, just through his eyes and harder to control. He almost killed a kid at his old school.”
“That kid was a dick, anyway.” Scott called over, he was shifting uncomfortably. Obviously he heard you two, maybe even knew that you had been kissing. You laughed and dragged Alex back to his brother. When we stopped Alex wrapped his arms around your waist and rested his chin on your head.
“Hi, Scott.” You chirped at the boy, pushing Alex back with your elbow.
“[Y/N],” He greeted me with a nod. You sighed and pulled the kid into a hug, he probably thought he was too cool to hug you, but you didn’t care. He begrudgingly patted your back and you pulled away, “I guess you’re one of my new teachers,” He said and stuck his arms in his pockets.
“Yep,” You nodded, despite him not being able to see you.
“Does this mean you’ll go easy on me? You know, since you’re sleeping with my brother?” He attempted to gesture to Alex but was off a bit.
“Scott!” Alex snapped at him, his face burning almost as much as yours, “That was uncalled for.”
“Just a question,” He shrugged. Alex pushed on his neck again.
“Let’s go, dufus.” He muttered and pushed him forwards. You followed near them, your hand wrapped in Alex’s free one. As they were walking Scott ran into Ms. Grey, who was carrying supplies she needed for her next class, trigonometry, you were sure of it.
“Oh,” Scott let out as they collided. Jean’s books went flying, and the young redhead held out her hands, stopping their descent and pulling them back towards her, they landed in a neat pile in her hands. She gave Scott a disdainful look, and pulled her things close to her.
Scott pointed up at the blindfold, “I can’t,” he pointed out, in a tone you couldn’t quite place, he was talking to no one.
Alex knitted his eyebrows together and looked at Scott, “What?” He sounded worried, “Who’re you talking to?” You laughed and looked at Jean, urging her to use her words and not her mind.
The younger woman sighed, “Me.” She said aloud. Alex gave her a look, not quite a glare, but close enough to one that you smacked his arm. He gave you a look of surprise but trained it back on Jean.
Scott’s head leaned forward a bit, “I just heard your voice in my head,” He sounded astonished.
Jean scoffed, “I’m telepathic, I read minds,” She explained in her normal know-it-all tone.
Scott was looking forward, not at her -- which you had to fight a fit of giggles watching, “Well stay out of mine.” He said defiantly, “I don’t need some weird girl creeping around in there.”
Jean’s eye flickered to the ground. You knew why, she was always called weird, even among mutants. You smiled at her to tell her that Scott didn’t mean anything by the statement, “Don’t worry, Scott. There’s not much to see,” She shot back at the kid, she turned around and began to stalk off, rolling her eyes.
“Hey, wait. I didn’t tell you my name.” Scott called to her.
“No,” She snapped back at him, “you didn’t.”
“Ah, young love.” You mumbled in an airy tone, drawing a laugh from Alex and he turned to kiss your forehead. He was drawn away by a voice coming from the stairs.
“Alex Summers?” Hank asked as he made his way into the hall. He wore a brown blazer over a gray collared shirt. The man smiled at Alex.
“Hank McCoy!” Alex drug out the scientist's last name and shook his hand, “Woah! What happened to big, blue, furry you?” He seemed startled and gestured to the all of Hank.
“Ah,” Hank looked uncomfortable, looking at the wall now, “I keep him under control now.” He looked back at Alex nodding.
“That’s right, last time you were here Hank didn’t have his meds.” You hummed and leaned against Alex.
“Meds?” Alex looked at Hank with a puzzled look.
“It’s, uh, it’s how I keep him under control.” Hank rubbed the back of his neck.
“Ah, okay,” Alex nodded, back to chuckling until he remembered the kid standing next to him, “Oh, right, this is my brother, Scott,” he clapped the kid on the back.
“Hey, Scott,” McCoy greeted, shifting his weight, “I’m Hank McCoy, one of the teachers here.” Scott nodded not saying anything.
Alex sighed at his brother’s rudeness, “Where’s the professor?”
“He’s in a class rightnow, speaking of,” You checked your watch and looked at Alex apologetically, “I have to get to the chem lab before someone starts a fire.” You turned and threw your arms around his neck, giving him a long passionate kiss, “You better stay for a couple days, sir.” You whispered to him and he placed his lips back on yours.
“You guys are necking, aren’t you?” Scott asked in a disgusted voice.
Alex rested his forehead on you and laughed at his brother, “Just because you haven’t done it, doesn’t mean you can call it gross, bro.” You laughed too.
“Meet me for lunch, Alex. And we can catch up.” You pecked his nose and walked off.
“How’s Scott settling in?” You asked picking up a carrot. Alex was leaning against a tree and you against him. His hands were wrapped tight against your waist. You felt his chest bounce as he laughed.
“Well, if you call destroying the professor's favorite tree settling it, and carving a divot in the ground by the lake? Then yes, he’s settled in great!” Alex leaned his head against the trunk of the tree, “I feel so bad for the kid. When I got my mutation, I was terrified since I couldn’t control it, but I still had a bit of control, just a bit. Him, if he opens his eyes without the glasses -- these special ruby quartz ones that make him look like more of a douche than usual--”
“You know, you have a fabulous relationship with your brother.” You hummed and nuzzled your nose into the crook of his neck, just drinking in the sent of him.
He laughed, “Yeah, I know. But if he opens his eyes without the shades on, he can’t control it. Those beams go haywire.”
You shook your head and sat up, “It took you a while to learn to control yours, yes, and now it is no trouble for you. You choose to use it, and you can control it.” You turned so You were staring into his eyes, “He’ll be fine. There are so many people here that can help him…” You paused for a moment, “If you would stick around for more than a few months at a time… you could help him.” You really wanted him to stay around for you, but you knew you had a better chance of him staying for Scott.
“Well, if I stayed, I think we’d both be a little too… preoccupied to get much done.” He set his forehead on yours, giving me a lopsided smile.
“Alex,” You shrieked and pushed up and away from him, your face red, “you are a dog, sir. You know that, don’t you?”
“Hey, you know you love it.” He smirked and slid his sunglasses over his eyes, “You really want me to stay, doll?” He asked.
“Of course,” You straightened your blouse and flatted you hair, getting ready to go off to teach the freshmen class.
“Then I will,” He promised, pushing himself up and wrapping his arms around your waist, looking down at you, “how bout that? I’ll be able to teach, and help train the students…” He started.
“And what, pray tell, will you teach? How to rebuild a motorcycle?” You laughed and put your arms around his neck, and you two stood there like that -- you on your toes to be able to reach his neck.
“Mechanics.” He said defiantly.
“There’s already someone who teaches that.” You said, “You’d know that if you talked to the others. I mean, you hide away when you’re here or you hang around the students. You don’t talk to the other teachers.”
“Well, how about a trainer for the older kids, I can handle their mutations. And I know about the chaos.” He suggested.
“Well, first you gotta make the commitment to stay.” You mumbled and pulled away from him, “I have classes from now till three, you go find some adults to talk to, you big kid.” You pushed him and started walking off across the lawn, leaving a small wake of flowers after me. That was all you were really able to do anymore, for some reason your mutation was declining, even Charles couldn’t explain it, it was just… happening.
Last class You thought to yourself. You may not be a student, but classes drained you of all energy, besides, the freshmen class never closed their mouths. You had just finished wiping off the tables when a few of the sophomores filled into the class, just before the bell. Among them was Jubilation and Scott, being lead by her. They took their seats near your desk and were quiet as the rest them filed into the room.
Once everyone was seated you stood and cleared your throat, drawing attention from the students, “Since you had a test yesterday, and I don’t have the next unit ready, you can use this time to finish homework.” You sat down after the little announcement and pulled out the stack of tests and a few red pens. You barely glanced up to see an outstretched hand.
“Yes, Ms. Lee?” You asked, folding your arms over the desk and looking at her.
“Who was that guy you were with?” She asked in her lively voice. There were a few giggles, and a groan from Scott.
“That would be Mr. Summers’s brother.” You smiled, laughed a bit.
“But you were practically making out with him,” The teenager made a face, and you laughed a little more. At that and at the fact that Scott’s face was red. You had just noticed the sunglasses on his face, and had to agree with Alex on how they affected his appearance.
“Yes, that is usually what a girl does with the man she is dating.” You answered.
“Wait, but your like fifty. Aren’t you too old to have a boyfriend? Shouldn’t you be, like, married?”
“Only thirty-nine, and no. And I will get married once a man has the guts to ask.” Hell, I’ve known Alex for twenty and have been dating him for nineteen. He should have the guts by now You said to yourself, returning your attention to your work. “But this is not a subject I should be discussing with my students.” You mumbled, “So get back to work, Ms. Lee.”
With a few hours, you were in bed with Alex. His arm wrapped around your bare skin as the both of you drifted off to sleep. At least, almost did. The house began to shake violently. You rolled over, slightly afraid and grabbed your nightgown from the floor, throwing it on and stepping out the door to see what the problem was. Charles came rolling down the hall, sending the children back to bed. He stopped at your door.
“Jean again?” You asked. The professor nodded solemnly and rolled on to the young girls dorm. When you turned back to your own room, Alex was bolt upright, his eyes wide and pupils small. He looked afraid.
“Shit,” You mumbled and walked back over to him slowly. You had only seen a few of his panic attacks, the quake must have triggered it. You sat next to him, rubbing his back, trying to calm him down. He wrapped his arms around you and buried his head in my next, you could feel him shaking. He muttered something about you being okay, like he was trying to calm you down. You just sat with him, not knowing what to do until he stopped shaking.
Alex left with Charles to run an errand. You had been busy with work the entire day anyway. You had only seen him once, and that was to say you’d see him at dinner before he left with Hank, Charles, and the two people you’d never thought would be back, Raven and Moira. You had given Raven a rather disdainful look, even after what happened in Washington, it didn’t make up for the past. You were about to go down and meet up with them, but there it was again, at the near end of the school day, a tremor. This one with more force than the one last night. There was heat coming through the floor. Before you could even take a step away from you desk I felt a rush, a sick feeling in your stomach, and then you were outside, with a few others. You stumbled back and ran into Hank, just as the mansion exploded.
You looked around the crowd. There were coughing and heaving students everywhere, everyone looked confused. Well all except for a silver clad man in the center of everything, he was breathed out a ‘wow’.
“Peter?” You asked, you hadn’t seen the silver blur in ten years. He smiled at you, a lopsided grin.
“Where, where did you…” Hank started to ask, it was a question you wanted to ask yourself but was too stunned as you scanned the crowed, looking for him.
“I was looking for the professor, I thought he lived here.” Peter looked around, grimacing. Smoke was thick in the air, and you started to cough a bit, but began to move around the crowd, Where is he? You looked back, thinking you’d missed something and saw Hank’s pitiful look. He turned it on Peter though.
“They took him.” He mumbled. All of a sudden, there was a ripple of murmurs, people turning to look at something behind you, you turned too. Raven was standing there, blue. In nothing, you might add. The children were amazed, Raven -- Mystique to them -- was a hero among mutants.
“They look up to you,” Hank explained to her, his hands on his hips. The matters of the others were out of my mind once more, the smoke was cleared and I could see better. He wasn’t there.
“Where is he?” You asked, your voice sounded hoarse, a bit desperate. But it was too quiet, no one heard you, “Where’s Alex?” You spoke up. No one paid attention. They were all focused on a car that had pulled up.
“What happened?” It was Scott. He had ran up to the crowd, looking up at the ruins of the mansion, “Where’s Alex.” People listened to him. You turned to listen, if they wouldn’t answer you, maybe they’d answer Scott, “Where’s my brother?” His voice was edged with panic that was starting to overtake him.
Peter made a face, “Pretty sure I got everyone.” People began to look around just like you had done. You, on the other hand, you dropped to the ground, your head between my legs. You were going to be sick, especially when you heard Hank.
“Alex was closest to the blast.” You looked up, you could feel yourself tear up. But you weren’t going to cry, not in front of the students.
“No,” You choked out, and everyone looked at you. Well all except Scott and Jean, they had ran off, “he can’t be dead.” You shook your head, pushing yourself to your feet, ignoring everyone but Hank as you pushed towards him.
“[Y/N], I’m sorry.” He shook his head, not meeting your eyes, “Listen, when we went down, he was talking to me. I guess he needed to tell someone, and Charles was talking with the girls. He said he was…” Hank paused, but something about your expression made him continue, slowly. So painfully slow, “He said he was going to stick around, that he was going to propose to you by the end of the week. He said he had the ring for years,” He was rushing out the words now, “he just couldn’t find the right time, and he figured, now or never.” He stopped. You were crying, silently. Hank held out his arms and you fell into him, sobbing into his shirt. The sound of the helicopter blades were thunderous, but you ignored it, you wanted to ignore everything.
There was a man shouting ‘fire’ and everything went dark.
Woohoo, longest one. It evens out to about 11 pages if you put it onto a document
