“I – I don’t know how to get in,” Remus said, running his hands over the stone gargoyle who guarded the entrance to the headmaster’s office. Padfoot whined behind him, his eyes looking up and down, trying to figure out the problem.
“Remus Lupin?” A voice behind them made them both yelp. Padfoot scooted behind Remus, whimpering.
“Professor McGonagall,” Remus said, trying to keep his voice even and barely managing it.
“Am I correct in thinking that you are on the run from the Ministry for breaking Mr Black out of Azkaban?” She asked, one neatly plucked eyebrow quirking up as she stared at them.
“Yes,” Remus swallowed. “But he didn’t do what they said he did. Peter Pettigrew was the secret keeper. He betrayed Lily and James and blew apart that street and all those Muggles. We’re going to find him and clear Sirius’s name, and once all that is done we’re going to go rescue Harry from Lily’s sister,” he drew in a deep breath after spilling his guts to their old head of house. She’d always been able to draw the truth out of them. To this day, Remus doesn’t know how she did it.
“Good,” she nodded, stepping around them so she faced the stone gargoyle. “Acid Pop!” She said, and the stone gargoyle moved aside, revealing the hidden staircase behind it. “Follow me,” She ordered, and they walked up the steps behind her. Remus turned and watched the gargoyle move back into place, blocking what little light there had been. It dawned on him then that this was their only chance. If they fucked this up, Dumbledore could alert the Ministry to their whereabouts, and no one would ever believe their story.
