the Florida project is such an underrated movie.
i was re watching it and this quote kinda stuck with me.
the movie is told through the perspective of a kid. the adventure, shared ice cream, swimming. the kids have an idea of the things surrounding them but they're still innocent, still unaware of the tragic things in the adult's lives that they are surrounded by.
when Halley beats up Scooty's mom, the focus is on the back of scooty's head, not the fight. the fight is in the corner and blurred. The kid doesn't see the fight like an adult would. When Halley's "guests" come, we only See Mooney in the bath, left to assume what was happening in the other room. Again, the kid doesn't see the prostitution, she just knows shes playing in the tub until some random needs to take a piss.
This quote is so tragically beautiful. Of course Mooney's favorite tree is a dilapidated, tipped over, mess. She doesn't focus on the moss and weeds, she focuses on the trunk. A trunk That's still good enough to sit on.
That's her life. The tree is barely hanging on, covered in moss and weeds and knocked down. Yet it still grows. Mooney loves the life she has, even though its a pretty crappy one. When she's dragged from her mom she is crying and screaming, she loves how she lives because she doesn't see the moss and weeds that cover her life. all she sees is the trunk underneath.
