Okay so, I know a lot of people are very excited and curious for part 3 of Scorch Marks, so I'm gonna update y'all on how the schedule is looking.
Since I decided to make my Christmas Special event, part 3 is gonna take just a tad bit more time to come out. The event is taking just about all of my free time, so I'm only gonna continue working on part 3 once the event is finished. The Christmas fics will be posted until around the 25th, so right after that I'll be able to continue with Scorch Marks.
My guess is part 3 will be posted sometime around the 30th, or hopefully sooner if I can finish editing it. <3
A little while ago I wrote about how a small scare given by the fleeing piano symbolized the Painter’s Wife and how she reacted to him after she was burned. Something else I’ve noticed has been indicative of her throughout the game has been the various burn marks you can find along the walls.
For instance, if you traverse down the long hallway with the two deer heads, you get pushed back a little as you hear the Wife crying. After this point you can choose to proceed towards her anyway, or turn around quickly to flip the light switch and avoid her. If you go towards her, the Painter falls for a moment and the place where her shadow was is scorched.
The bedroom’s gramophone causes the room to melt and the walls to also be scorched. Fire imagery is everywhere in Layers of Fear.
What’s significant about this is something that takes place in the second chapter, right before you reach the bedroom sequence. You enter a room to grab a key, prompting the door to slam behind you, the lights go out, and you hear footsteps of someone unknown approaching the door. They knock lightly a few times, before banging intensely. After a short period of this they walk away, and you are free to go.
Now when you leave you see paint streaks on the floor which lead you to a painting, upon approaching which you come across another Whispered Words object; the cane.
However, while you are sitting in this room waiting, you will notice something. Not only do the audio footsteps let you in on this approaching person, but as they get closer to the door, you can see the wall around it become more and more scorched. It only leaves as the person leaves.
Perhaps this is meant to represent the Painter locking himself in his workshop for long periods of time. Of course this would upset his Wife, and so she would knock on the door - sometimes incessantly - demanding he come out. And he would be unwilling, or perhaps even afraid, to open it. Given his schizophrenia and mental state at the time these things were happening, it’s very possible he might have been unsettled by this, what with the turmoil going on in his head.
He may have even thought the Wife trying to get him out was actually someone else. After all, there is a rat note illustrating the idea that rats have disguised themselves as people and come knocking.
Could he really be afraid of her on some level? It’s very possible - the terrifying way in which she’s depicted in the game is an indication. Just how much and in what way towards the end of their marriage is unknown, however.
The chained piano showed us that the Wife was wary and closed off to him. This particular door sequence, I believe, shows that the Painter was wary and closed off to her in return.
It’s still in its first draft so there are probably quite a few grammatical mistakes
