The language in this book lifts me up and carries me away though I can feel the anger of the main character, Sister Holiday, a sister of the Order of Sublime Blood, in every world. She is mad at the world, but she tries to channel that anger at things she can control. And when arson targets her home, her convent, her school, and her new life, Sister Holiday takes no shit and sets about finding out who is doing it and why.
You can definitely tell the author, Margot Douaihy wrote poetry before this because just about every passage was lyrical and honeyed, as though trying to shine a light through a jar to better illuminate the world in colour. Just really really good writing!
Fire is immense and immeasurable; it will keep expanding, reproducing, until water or air stop it. If the Lord cherishes us, why are we so fragile and fire so grand? Pointless debate. We are the fire, and the fire is us. We were born with electricity in our hearts, the divine flame. When we die, we return to the elements. Ashes to fucking ashes.

Another month of interesting sounding books is upon us! Silliness aside there are some really good sounding stuff coming out this February. SCORCHED GRACE - MARGOT DOUAIHY Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐ I am a sucker for an imperfect protagonist and a good noir feel mystery and Scorched Grace delivered for me on both fronts! I wish Sister Holiday the queer riot girl musician nun had been my music teacher at school! The mystery was compelling however I also enjoyed just reading about the characters lives in New Orleans and during the flash backs. There is plenty of depth and mystery in her character which is fitting given this is the start of a series and I expect we’ll learn more about her as the series continues.Looking forward to the next instalment! Many thanks to Zando Projects/Gillian Flynn Books for an eARC via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
