🌈 Queer ♿ Disability ✍️ Memoir

I adored this memoir. It’s equal parts witty and vulnerable, and Ryan O’Connell is definitely one of the like three people who deserves to make it in LA. There were parts of this book that deeplt resonated, especially the parts exploring his relationship with his mother and his analysis of life in LA vs. New York. I mean, the description of the kind of people one will run into in LA must be one of the most spot-on ever written. (Although, to be fair, as someone who is not — or not trying to get into — the industry, it’s fairly easy to avoid them, but yes, the self-absorbed actor types are a thing. As a queer person in a pretty conventional relationship (common among late bloomers, I guess), I also super appreciated the perspective of folks who really forged their own part sexually and romantically, and Ryan O’Connel did just that. In part, as he describes so eloquently, because there was is just not much of a blueprint for existing as a queer disabled person. And it may be this reality (and/or O’Connel just being a fucking amazing writer) that makes steer clear of such of the, “us Millennials” rheotric that seems to be so prevalent in memoirs written by members of our generation. Literally haven’t seen my experiences reflected in a single one of them and also still confused as to why generalizing should be the goal. However, this book dances to the beat of its own drum, just like its author, and it does so in incredible entertaining, funny, and often heartbreaking ways. I hand’t heart of the authors show before reading the book, but I will definitely watch it!

My dream is to be able to step into a huge bookstore, and it's just nothing but queer books, organized by genre and I can browse to my heart's content, leave with a huge expensive pile, and know I'll be able to come back again and still find something. And there's an urban fantasy/paranormal romance section. That's key. Well, not mandatory. But it would rule.

Mini review: I list this book as my fav book of the year in 2024. It is so beautifully written and great to listen to as an audiobook. This book is heavily focused on love, tenderness, and how friendship can save you.

Mini review: I kid you not, I read this book twice back-to-back, then suggested it to a book club to read it for the third time. If you were ever that kid who thought all horror movies are inherently queer (which they are), then this book is for you. Queer authors use the concept of horror movies to reflect and compare their own queerness– there are a few essays in there where I go uhhhhh, but it’s so good, I swear

Mini Review: I am a bit biased because I love almost all of Emily Austen's books, but this one felt like it was written just for me because the MC is an autistic lesbian who works as a reference librarian (me, literally me). I even dm Emily Austen to ask if she wrote this book for the sole purpose of satisfying me, and I have yet to get a response.

Mini Review: I genuinely think this book will go down as a classic, and if it doesn't, I will still frame it as such. Such a gorgeous book- I highly recommend the audiobook. There is this quote that I love that goes: 'This God, who teaches us that we can be both and neither and all and beyond and capable of multiplicities and expansiveness. Nonbinary, genderqueer. They, this God that is the God, my God, my Allah'. 

That's all! The idea of this blog is to post recommendations/reviews of single books, instead of making a list like this. I am very into contemporary books, ‘slice of life’. I am always down to have more queer bookish mutuals, and my DMs and ask box are always open
