GOD I KNOW RIGHT there's definitely a part of Gideon's determination to help Torbek that could be seen as not just from deeprooted empathy, having been in a similar situation, but also from the idea that if Torbek can escape the physical devices that represent his confines and trauma then there's hope that Gideon can do the same (especially with the kinda canon confirmation that the manacles don't come off). I do think it would be interesting to see exactly how far that goes post-canon. Long nights cooped up in some workshop with eachother just doing tests and trials and troubleshooting. Talking about their lives and experiences. Admitting things to eachother they'd never told another soul, not even Clementine, not even Kremy, in a haze of exhaustion and traumatised comraderie and a bit of booze to take the edge off. The only other friend who really, truly gets what they've been through. Gideon finally feeling closer to that absolute freedom he craves, if he can just master fey engineering. Torbek feeling giddy and flattered by all the one-on-one attention he's getting.

Gideon starting to take every setback and failure even more personally than Torbek. Torbek, who has been trying to come to terms with his situation and accept that he could still live a fulfilled life even with all this awful stuff on his back and in his body, that there are other kinds of healing he can focus on in the meantime - if not for Gideon pulling him back in going "No no I can get the Witchlight out of you, I know I can, I HAVE to." Gideon, who is falling more and more back into those unhealthy post-train thought cycles of "the only way you can ever fully move past this and have a better life is to scrub every trace of it from yourself". He's the guy who fixes stuff. If he can fix Torbek's problems then he can fix his own problems, and then everything will be fine. Yes, he knows it's late and he knows Torbek is tired and they've already done this test 50 times, but this time it might click for him. It's going to, it has to, and then they'll both be free of all this shit holding them down forever.
