April 5, 1984: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar breaks NBA scoring record
On this day 33 years ago, the Los Angeles Lakers played the Utah Jazz in front of 18,000 cheering fans at the Thomas and Mack Center at the University of Nevada. The game had a lot of hype going into it because the Lakers’ star center, 36 year old Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, was on the verge of breaking the all-time scoring record held by the mighty Wilt Chamberlain. Sure enough, with less than nine minutes left in the game, Magic Johnson passed the ball to Kareem and the 7′2″ center made one of his famous “sky hook” shots to score his 22nd point, and the 31,420th point of his career. It broke the record the many thought would stand forever. After he made the shot, the crowd erupted and the entire Lakers bench cleared to run and congratulate their teammate. The game had to stop while referees tried to regain control. Los Angeles went on to win the game 129-115.
Kareem holds the record to this day, with 38,387 career points. The closest active NBA player is Dirk Nowitzki, in 6th place with 30,211. LeBron James is 7th with 28,692.
Chasing the King: Analyzing the Trajectories of Ten NBA Stars Pursuing the All Time Scoring Record
This statistical analysis explores the seemingly impossible task of catching LeBron James on the NBA's all-time scoring list. The summary breaks down the mathematical requirements for breaking the record, factoring in career averages, games played per season, and the necessary longevity to reach 40,000+ points. It profiles ten current superstars, including Luka Dončić, Jayson Tatum, and younger phenoms, evaluating their current scoring pace against LeBron's historical benchmarks at the same age.
The analysis discusses the impact of the modern "scoring boom," where higher pace and three-point volume have inflated scoring numbers, potentially making the record more attainable than previously thought. However, it also weighs the negative impact of load management and injury history on these stars' chances. The piece looks at the durability factor, noting that scoring ability is only half the battle when chasing a record defined by unprecedented longevity.
The piece concludes by ranking the candidates based on the probability of them threatening the record. It frames the discussion not just as a math problem, but as a testament to the greatness required to sustain elite production for two decades.
Ten current stars have the tools to chase the all-time scoring record, but the math and wear of 20 seasons separate.
Hi. Sorry to bother you with this question, but in those 200/600 goals that Alexia and Messi scored for Barça, do they count the early goals for Barça B, or just the ones for the senior team?
a few points. when alexia re joined barça in 2012 she immediately joined the first team. she did not play for barça b. remember that alexia played for espanyol’s academy and one of barça's infantil squads when she was very young. second, the goals record is for the senior team and not every major goal scorer for barça was part of la masia.
barça’s players group keep statistics on all the players (not always accurate through the current year) but you can see alexia’s goal tally.

Wayne Gretzky’s record for most points in a single National Hockey League season has stood for nearly three decades. Some say it’s unbreakable, but as with any record in professional sports, it will seem unbreakable until the day it’s broken. Through time, the record stood at an ‘unbreakable’ level 16 times since the creation of the NHL in 1917-18...
