scorpion simultaniously manages to give their characters so much heart and personality and quirks and traits and also have them be flat as all hell and never learn their mistakes. its so unique i dont know HOW they do it
(i have only seen up to season3 finale. for these purposes, lets pretend s4 does not exist, though if anything i think itd drive my point home)
I love the team as much as anyone but you HAVE to agree the characters are strangely made. Its not that they fall flat on a personality front- each of them is clearly distinct, not just the members of Scorpion but also the sideliners like the homeland directors, Tim, Ray, Patrick, Ally ect ect. they and ESPECIALLY our main cast is a large draw of the show, a group of whacky misfits with distinguishable traits doing crazy stuff, yet i cant help but feel like they are so two dimensional in some spaces.
Take for example Happy. a favourite for right reasons, shes awsome and badass and a woman whos smart (which is a lot to ask of a 2014s cbs writers room), yet if you take a good long look at her her character comes down to 3 cores: mechanics, her relationship with Toby, and being an orphan. This leaves barely ANY room for nuance, as all we see is her being mean to everyone and, throughout the show, gradually get a little less mean to Toby and really, thats it. and this stuff happens to ALL the characters.
i honestly think Cabe and Sly are best off. Cabe because all hes got is "old" and "gun" but at least he's pleasant to watch, and Sly because of how megan made him less fearful and he stood up to walter a few times, though that eventually kinda washed away. The real worst crime here, are Walter and Paige.
Genuily these people are insufferable to watch. Paige's entire character concept is crazy- a person to 'help geniuses be normal', esentially infantilizing and babysitting a group of grown ass people is a wildly abelist concept, and things like autism was not THAT farfetched of an idea back in 2014. She is weirdly supposed to "bring everyone together" while she barely has a relationship to anyone outside of Walter, and her "you can save everyone!" positivity speech personality clashes with the taking-no-shit mother persona they just cant help but try to give her, making her a crazy hyporcite in 50% of episodes.
and Walter is constandly in the show portrayed as a guy who so strongly believes he has no emotions he cant process them, and while Elyes Gabel is a cutie it does NOT make up for the insane things Walter says and does. And if theyre pretending this man doesnt have Sociopathy because for many people it is synonymous with evil, then im simply forced to look at him from the standpoint where he has nothing more then a high IQ and appearently, a fucking annoying superiority complex he never EVER gets over, and this all without even getting into how this dumpster show ended.
and yet, somehow, these characters are endearing beyond belief. between good actors and delightful found family dynamics, i hate to say that while Scorpion is far from good, i cant help but love those freaks
