#OTD in @chicagocubs history ▸ The White Sox trade pitchers Warren Brusstar and Steve Trout to the Cubs for Dick Tidrow and Randy Martz, shortstop Scott Fletcher, and first baseman Pat Tabler. 

Trout ends up having the main impact among those involved, as he was a member of the Cubs' rotation in 1984 that helped the Cubs make the playoffs for the first time in 39 years. Trout goes 13-7 with a 3.41 ERA in 32 games for the '84 Cubs. He wins Game 2 of the NLCS against the @padres with an 8⅓ inning, two-run effort, and posts a 43-38 record during his five seasons on the north side of Chicago.

The start-up of a start-up for start-ups

For the many, not the few - Ideas Britain is part accelerator; part mentoring platform; part game, part show. And then there's our X Factor: the audience is kingmaker, they have power to push ideas into production ... It sounds great doesn't it – and we've made it look proper bling in presentations. That headline concept was all we needed to get big time brands round the table, and to secure elite business talent on our coaches' roster. Although I suspect she was angling for a new princess doll, my five year old daughter described daddy's new business as genius. That's opinion, but one thing that's fact is the Thomas Edison quote Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. And it has been a sweaty few months. Building a disruptive new business from the ground up takes time and energy: your model lacks concrete reference points, and your problems don't have public domain solutions. You have to go the extra mile in testing because, well, it's an untested proposition. And in-house you need need an uber-talented team because botching the execution will kill the business entirely. As I said it takes time and energy – and as anyone that's ever been within three feet of a start-up knows: time and energy are expensive. It was decided that to give Ideas Britain the launch it deserves, here at home and in the US, the business should seek more funding – which is very common in the early throws of a new venture. But before I could dig out my phone and little black contacts book, Ideas Britain Chairman Stuart Marks, a serial entrepreneur and start-up enthusiast, made a great call of a different kind. As a digital business that's fundamentally about democratising the industry of ideas, Ideas Britain wants to enable success and opportunity regardless of a person's postcode, CV or surname – we believe in opportunity and equality for the many, not just the few. So, when Stuart Marks urged Ideas Britain to bypass the standard city investment channels (the few), and instead send an open invitation out asking anyone and everyone (the many) to put money in – there was immediate consensus; and that's a rare thing in a board room. With that, Ideas Britain launched its funding drive on Crowdcube on Friday 15th May 2015, and at time of writing (Tuesday 19th May at 10am), we're almost two-thirds of the way towards our goal. In £10s, £100s, and £1,000s, everyday entrepreneurs have, on a level playing field, pledged to buy shares in Ideas Britain just as big-time players have stepped up. With that we are honoured that so many investors, big and small, see potential in our business. However, the decision to go down this democratic funding avenue is paying dividends in other unforeseen ways. When Ideas Britain secured the coaching services of Scott Fletcher MBE – philanthropist, former entrepreneur of the year, and founder of big time IT business ANS – we thought we'd done pretty well. We were immeasurably grateful to have Scott pledge time and energy to Ideas Britain, that we filed it away as a succesful investment in its own right. But this week we got note that Scott had also pledged cash to Ideas Britain - so he's not only prepared to stand with us as a mentor and believer in our social mission, but he's prepared to stand with us as a shareholder and believer in our business mission - as you can see.

Scott's investment came right out of left-field, and I fear it wouldn't have happened had we not taken the Crowdcube punt. It goes to show that business can surprise you, that it pays to have faith, and that you should always (mostly) trust your Chairman. So thank you Stuart, thank you Scott, thank you team - and thank you to our investors; the big and the small, the few and the many.
