Things that excite me: Aussie Disposals & warehouse sales. Over $350 gear for $135 including hike tent and boots. I'd call this a productive day.
So I often try to write sappy inspirational posts about Scouting but can't get my point across right. But now seems like a pretty good time. On the weekend I went to Rover Dinner which for the most part admittedly is prestigious awards given to very deserving individuals, but it goes for too long and the speeches drain you. But this year the Branch Commissioner's award went to the First Aider Scout who saved a man's life at a Rover event at the start of the year. This man, a random member of the public, was cycling and rode over a fallen live-wire, left for dead with 12% burns to his body. He wouldn't be alive if not for these Scouts. In fact he made an unexpectedly fantastic recovery. He was there to present her award and watching them hug was quite moving. On the same night, I was approached by a number of people for various responsibilities and offers - recruitment, Deaf awareness education at Cuboree... and then I was asked to accept a nomination to sit on Branch Council representing Melbourne - my associates would be the Lord Mayor and an MP. Signing off on it today, I find out I was selected over Adam Bandt. Help. Scouting is something so much bigger than me that I have plunged myself into with such passion that sometimes it shocks me when I turn around and see what I'm in the middle of. For all the fun it provides, and the teasing from people outside the movement who don't understand it, deep down it has such a grand agenda and good aims. There is literally no other organisation in the world that can compare itself to a 30-million-member strong non-profit youth movement. Damn.
