“Good evening, SCP-905.” Dr. Liu said upon entering Mr. Chameleon’s containment cell.
“Good evening, Doctor.” Chameleon responded, sitting as if he’s meditating. “Allow me to guess, it’s not a social visit?”
“No. Not really.” Dr. Liu responded, sitting on a chair next to a table in the middle of the room. Chameleon sits on the second chair. “The foundation wants to know more about you.”
“What do you mean?” Mr. Chameleon asked. “What do you wish to know?”
“Well... what did you do before we found you?” Dr. Liu asked.
“I was traveling in Asia.” Chameleon responded. “You know- Israel, Both Koreas, China...”
“Have you stayed anywhere for a longer time?” Dr. Liu asked.
“Yes, actually.” Chameleon said. “I lived in Japan for around five years. I lived in Kyoto.”
“Did you have your own house?” Dr. Liu asked.
“No. I actually lived with some family.” Chameleon said. “They were thee siblings. The oldest one, Aki, took her two younger siblings from their neglecting parents. They found me and allowed me to live with them. I helped them around the house a lot.”
“How did you guys get along?” Dr. Liu asked, writing down everything.
“The two younger brothers, Akira and Daichi, were... well... kids. They were hilarious, and helped me cook sometimes.” Chameleon answered. “Akira was the strong one out of the twins, and Daichi was the quiet one.”
“And what about Aki?” Dr. Liu asked. “Were you close?”
He could’ve sense Chameleon blushing a little to the sound of her name.
“Hella close.” Chameleon answered. “She was a beautiful woman. Caring, fighting for everyone’s rights, the one who’d punch god if she could. After the twins went to sleep we hang out a lot. Usually, we went to a food market, sometimes to a bar. We always sat under one cherry tree on a hill, talking about everything.”
“She knows about your siblings?” Dr. Liu asked.
“Yeah. She knew about them. I told her.” Chameleon continued. “After two years I lived with them, Aki and I... well... we started dating.”
“You had sexual relations with her?” Liu asked.
“Not sexual. Neither of us is an allosexual.” Chameleon answered. “But we were romantically attracted to each other. I think that... Well...”
“Yeah?” Dr. Liu asked, looking at him curiously.
“I think that... if she was still alive we could’ve ended up married today.” he answered.
“If she was still alive?” Liu asked. “What happened to her?”
Chameleon stared at the floor.
“We were sitting under that tree, and we were talking.” Chameleon said. “All of a sudden, someone came and just... he SHOT her straight in the head. I... I just stood there, frozen, and... I let her DIE. I let the woman I love die.”
“Is that why you left?” Dr. Liu asked.
“Yes. This is why I left.” Chameleon said. “The guy was arrested and the kids were returned to their parents. I... I left after her funeral.”
“And after that?” Dr. Liu asked.
“After that, I went to the place you guys found me. To the entrance of that site.” Chameleon answered. “I blame myself for her death. I wanted humanity to be safe from me.”
“So that’s it?” Dr. Liu asked.
“Yes. That’s it.” Mr. Chameleon responded. “Thank you for letting me talk about it, Doc. I haven’t really talked about it with anyone. Not even my siblings.”
“You don’t have to call me informal names, Chameleon.” Dr. Liu said, giving him a warm smile.
“Then how would you like to be called?” Mr. Chameleon asked.
As he got up from his chair, he just giggled and smiled at him.
“I think you already know, Chameleon.” Dr. Liu said, before exiting the door.
Dr. Liu pulled out his phone, dialed a number and waited for them to pick up.
“It’s so nice of my twin to call me while he’s at work.” The man on the other side said. “Have you questioned him yet, Daichi?”
“Yes, Akira, I did.” Dr. Liu said, trying to hide his tears. “He remembers us. He didn’t recognize me, but he remembers.”
“But you had to pretend you know nothing.” Akira said.
“I did and it sucked.” Dr. Liu answered. “It sucked so much. I...”
“That’s okay. I’m your twin.” Akira said. “You can cry on the phone with me.”
Dr. Liu sat on the couch in the break room, with nobody else around him, and just began to sob.
“I wanted to tell him that I never blamed him for Aki’s death.”
