I've seen people, in the Indy and the Guardian mostly, worrying that the UK will lose its UN Security Council spot if we give up our nuclear weapons. Thats not how it works. We're written into the Charter as a permanent member of the SC and its not dependant on our nuclear weapons. The 5 members of the UNSC have that position by virtue of being the main winners in WW2, not because they have nukes. Removing the UK from its permanent seat on the SC would require an amendment to the Charter which would require a 2/3rds vote of the General Assembly and the agreement of all permanent members of the SC including the UK. Our seat is not dependant on our possession of nuclear weapons and losing our SC seat is no reason to not give up on Trident, the most useless waste of money in the Treasury budget.
