Okay... I know it must sound so silly but at what DPI are usually illustrations created for publishing, books, cards, and so on? I work with 300 dpi and a 12/16 inches and sometimes my computer gets tired of all the layers in photoshop. Specially when using the mixer brush. Thanks
300 dpi at 100% of the needed trim size is the least resolution you should go. Many of my artists create bigger than needed, or at 600dpi, just in case I need to record or zoom in.
A trick I just learned if your photoshop is choking…buy a fast external hard drive, preferably with a thunderbolt or USB 2 or 3 connector, and work off that instead of your desktop. Make sure to set the scratch disks in photoshop to also be on that hard drive. It’s not a free option, but it’s a good patch until you can afford to upgrade your computer.
