Well, everyone. I got this spoiler in The New York Times and also from a few comic book critics I know on Youtube, and guess what, the wedding didn’t happen. It’s pretty ironic, IMO, but then again, it’s pretty much to be expected in this age where entertainers think “subverting expectations”. The wedding didn’t happen. Bruce got jilted.
I know probably some people are going to be pissed off about it. I am honestly surprised given that even I as an outsider expected them to at least be married for a few years, and then maybe something happens where there’s some promise that they would get back together at some other time, or maybe some actual compelling reason why they cancelled it, like Bruce and/or Selina having unresolved baggage . But nope, they just need to mess with your expectations a bit after giving you around (correct me if I’m wrong, Batfans?) Over a year and a half of buildup.
All I can say about subversion is that by itself, it’s pretty empty. Good or okay stories I have experienced in various media have involved building the fictional world or universe, along with building the characters, providing them with likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, real flaws that affect their decisions. Good stories I have found are the ones that actually either exceeded my expectations, or paid off with something a la Checkov’s Gun. Who knows, maybe some people are fine with this over in the Batman titles, but if plenty aren’t happy with, then honestly, I can say that DC comics is full of insanity. Hollywood and Marvel Comics have done there fair share of subversions in the recent years and a lot of the results have been declines and disappointments, but with myself out of the game, I can’t help but say that I am glad to not be part of this repetitive story right now. I think I can settle with the end of Nolan’s Batman instead.
